Work Text:
The Sunny bobbed peacefully at the dock of some Village, and the town was holding an event:
COUPLE’S CHALLENGE FESTIVAL – WIN 5000 BERRIES!
“Five. Thousand. Berries,” Nami whispered, eyes locked on the sign like it was the Holy Grail.
She was at the market with Zoro and Sanji, both of whom were too busy arguing over sake to notice the danger approaching.
“No way, I’ll let you drink any sake, you Marimo!” Sanji said, holding the bag of sake in his arms.” They’re for cooking, not for you to drink! And you –”
“Come on, cook!” Zoro cuts in, eyeing the bag Sanji is holding. “Let me have some. You got a lot, even if I drink some, it wouldn’t hurt you.”
“As if. You’ll drink it all in one day. You liar.”
“Sake is important to me.”
Before the tension could ignite into violence, Nami grabbed both by the collars and yanked them toward the festival booth.
“Excuse me,” She beamed at the organizer. “I’d like to enter my two friends here into the Couples Challenge.”
The elderly woman behind the table blinked. “Ah, are those two... boyfriends?”
“Yes!” Nami nodded so quickly it was suspicious. “These two—madly in love, completely committed, painfully clingy. Right, boys?”
Zoro blinked. “What the hell are you—”
“We’re what now?” Sanji added, looking deeply amused.
Nami squeezed both of their shoulders hard. “You. Are. A. Couple. Just for the competition. Got it?”
Zoro grunted. “This is stupid. Cook? Are you in?”
Sanji smirked. “We get to win money by pretending to date? Count me in.”
Zoro side-eyed him, but nodded. “Fine. But don’t get mad when we lose.”
Nami’s grin grew wolfish. “Let’s see how long that lasts.”
Back on the ship..
Nami returned to the Sunny, strolling up the gangplank with confidence and two flyers in hand.
“Guys!” she called. “You’re gonna want to hear this!”
The crew was lounging on deck—Usopp stringing a trap net, Luffy chewing on a pineapple, Chopper sunbathing on a towel, and Robin quietly reading in a hammock. Brook is playing his violin. Franky was welding something huge.
“I entered us into a village competition,” Nami said, holding up the flyer.
“Is it a fighting tournament?” Luffy asked, sitting up.
“Even better!” Nami held up the flyer like a treasure map. “The town’s hosting a Couples’ Challenge Festival! First place wins 5000 berries!”
“Yohohoho! How romantic!” Brook said.
“SUPER profit!” Franky grinned.
Robin looked over the edge of her book. “Ah. I see. And which couple did you enter?”
“Zoro and Sanji.”
Silence.
Utter, complete silence—followed by an eruption of laughter.
“HA! No way!” Usopp howled. “You expect them to act like a couple? They can’t go ten seconds without screaming at each other!”
“Are you sure this isn’t a prank?” Franky asked.
“I can already hear the screaming,” Brook said.
“They’ll kill each other before they even reach the starting line,” Chopper said nervously.
“I think Zoro would rather jump overboard,” Luffy giggled.
“Why not just go as yourself and someone from the village?” Robin asked with a knowing smile.
Nami crossed her arms. “Because I know those two idiots are weirdly good at playing pretend. You wouldn’t believe how convincing they were when I signed them up.”
“Did they agree to it?” Chopper asked.
“Of course they did,” she lied with the confidence of a seasoned con artist. “They’ll be fine. Probably. Maybe. I guess.”
“...You just want the money,” Chopper whispered.
“You bet I do,” she grinned.
At the Festival Ground.
Round one of the Couples’ Challenge began under a decorated archway of roses and hearts, with a cheering crowd all around.
“Welcome, lovebirds!” the host beamed. “Our first game is... The Compatibility Quiz! You’ll be answering questions about your partner. Let’s see how in sync you are!”
Zoro and Sanji stood awkwardly in the spotlight.
“This is ridiculous,” Zoro muttered.
Sanji smirked. “Come on, baby, you’re not shy, are you?”
“Say that again and I’ll throw you.”
“Relax,” Sanji said, flipping his pen like a dagger. “Just “pretend” I’m your darling sweetheart.”
“I’d rather pretend I’m dead.”
Sanji smiled sweetly. “You’ll wish you were if we lose.”
But despite the sarcasm, they answered every question perfectly.
Q: Who is the boss in the relationship?
“Me.”
“The cook.”
Q: Favorite food?
“Rice Balls and sake.”
“Spicy seafood pasta.”
Q: Sleep habits?
“He can sleep anytime.”
“He kicks in his sleep.”
Q: Who said ‘I love you’ first?
A pause. They glanced at each other.
Both said: “Neither. We don’t say it. We show it.”
The host clutched her chest dramatically. “Oh my goodness! That’s so raw and romantic!”
The crowd swooned.
Back in the audience, Nami’s jaw dropped.
“They’re GOOD?” Usopp gasped.
“Do they secretly rehearse this or something?” Chopper asked.
“They do spend a lot of time together…” Robin mused.
“I KNEW IT!” Brook cried. “They’re in love! Yohohoho!”
Round two: Trust Walk
Sanji guides a blindfolded Zoro through a maze of obstacles, while he is on Zoro's back.
“Okay, mosshead, trust me,” Sanji said.
“When did I say I don’t trust you?” Zoro asked.
“I know you do,” Sanji smiled.
Meanwhile, with the crew,
“Do you think they can do it?” Chopper asked.
“I don’t know,” Usopp said. “I think they will be arguing for this one.”
“It’s going to take a long time, with them arguing and Zoro's sense of direction,” Nami sighed. “My money…” She cried.
“The challenge hasn't started yet,” Robin said. “They might make it.”
Back to the couple…
“Left, moss,” Sanji called, one hand lightly resting on Zoro’s shoulder as they moved through the narrow obstacle path. “No, your other left.”
Zoro let out a low grunt but obeyed, stepping carefully. Despite the blindfold, he didn’t hesitate much—each step deliberate, guided not just by Sanji’s voice, but by some quiet, invisible rhythm between them.
“You’re bossier than usual,” Zoro muttered, tilting his head toward the sound of Sanji’s breath.
“And yet,” Sanji said with a smirk, brushing his fingers down Zoro’s arm, “you’re still listening.”
“Only ‘cause I’m blindfolded.”
Sanji leaned close to his ear, voice a low murmur. “Don’t act like this is the first time you’ve let me lead you in the dark. Plus, we have to win the money for Nami-san.”
Zoro's jaw tensed, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he smirked, cheeks faintly flushed. “Tch. Just keep talking, curlybrow.”
As they reached a sudden dip in the path, Zoro’s foot slipped slightly on a patch of uneven grass. Instinctively, Sanji caught him from behind, arms tightening around his waist to steady him.
“Careful,” Sanji murmured, his breath warm against the back of Zoro’s neck.
Zoro stood frozen for a beat, heart thudding slightly too loud in his ears, but said nothing. Sanji’s hands lingered—perhaps a second longer than necessary- before gently guiding him forward again.
“You’re not half-bad at this,” Zoro mumbled.
“I know,” Sanji replied softly.
The crowd roared with applause as Zoro and Sanji stepped out of the maze, a trail of fluttering rose petals marking their flawless path. Sanji casually dusted Zoro’s shoulders, still perched behind him like it was the most natural thing in the world, while Zoro adjusted the blindfold with a grunt and a small, unmistakable smirk.
From the sidelines, the Straw Hat crew stared.
Gaping.
“What—” Usopp’s jaw moved, but no words came out. “What the actual— How did they finish that first?!”
“They didn’t even yell once…” Chopper whispered, eyes wide. “Not a single insult.”
“And Zoro didn’t get lost.” Nami clutched her face. “He didn’t get lost. Sanji didn’t call him a single insult. Zoro didn’t threaten to stab him. What is happening?”
Brook tapped his chin thoughtfully. “I must say, for two people who bicker like an old married couple… they are surprisingly functional as an actual couple.”
Robin closed her book slowly, a sly smile tugging at her lips. “Mm. Functional, yes. Familiar, even.”
“WOOOOOOOOOOO!” Luffy cheered, clapping wildly and punching the air. “That was AWESOME! Sanji was like, ‘trust me,’ and Zoro didn’t even argue! That’s real love, right? RIGHT?!”
Franky struck a pose. “THAT WAS SUPER SMOOTH! Smooth like cola on ice!”
“They even moved in sync,” Chopper added, bouncing with excitement. “Zoro didn’t even hesitate!”
“—I’m so confused,” Nami whispered in disbelief. “They’re actually good at this. Too good. It’s almost like—”
Then came the final round.
Final round: Dance of Devotion
Back with the crew, chaos was bubbling under the surface.
“Oh no,” Nami muttered, gripping the railing of the viewing area. “I forgot something really important.”
“What is it?” Chopper asked, bouncing on his hooves.
“Zoro can’t dance!” Nami shouted. “He’s all muscle and zero rhythm! We’re doomed!”
Usopp burst out laughing. “This is it! The ship’s going to sink from secondhand embarrassment!”
“Maybe I should have entered myself with Sanji,” Nami groaned, massaging her temple.
“Hey,” Brook offered gently, “perhaps we should give them the benefit of the doubt. They’ve done surprisingly well so far.”
Robin smiled knowingly behind her book. “Yes. Let’s keep watching. There may be more to their performance than we assumed.”
Luffy grinned. “Zoro’s gonna step on Sanji’s feet, huh? He’s terrible with balance if it’s not sword stuff!”
Franky gave a low whistle. “If they can pull this off, I’ll weld a heart to the side of the Sunny.”
A slow waltz began. Zoro looked visibly uncomfortable.
“I don’t know how to dance.”
Sanji smirked and pulled him in by the waist. “Then follow my lead. Like always.”
Zoro sighed. “Don’t step on my foot.”
Sanji grinned. “Only if you dip me.”
They danced smoothly, surprisingly well-matched. The occasional spin, a lean-in too close, the tension of a kiss that didn’t happen—but could’ve.
As the final notes of the waltz faded into the evening breeze, Zoro and Sanji slowly separated, only by a breath. Sanji’s hand lingered at Zoro’s chest, fingers curled slightly in the fabric of his shirt, while Zoro’s forehead pressed gently to his.
They didn’t say anything.
They didn’t have to.
The entire festival square erupted with applause, cheers echoing into the orange dusk. Streamers popped. Confetti fluttered in the air like falling sakura petals. The host stepped forward with stars in their eyes and a massive grin.
“And the winners of this year’s Couples Challenge—by an overwhelming majority—are these two lovebirds! Let’s hear it for them!”
The crowd lost it.
On the sidelines, the Straw Hats stood frozen.
Nami looked like her soul had just left her body.
“What… what just happened?” she whispered.
“They won,” Chopper said in awe.
“No, no, I saw that,” Nami said, eyes wide as dinner plates. “I mean—did you see that? They were... good. Too good.”
“Yohohoho,” Brook chuckled. “That was more romantic than any play I’ve ever seen.”
“Zoro danced,” Usopp whispered like he’d seen a ghost. “And not just that—he was good at it. HOW?”
“They didn’t argue once,” Franky said, eyes hidden behind his shades but stunned.
Robin closed her book softly, a knowing smile curving her lips. “You know, I was starting to suspect something.”
Luffy clapped loudly, grinning. “I didn’t know Zoro and Sanji could be such a perfect team! That was awesome!”
Still reeling, Nami staggered over as the duo rejoined them, a large bag of prize money in Sanji’s hand.
“Five thousand berries,” Sanji said casually, holding them out to her. “For our lovely manager.”
“Don’t forget our bonus points,” Zoro added, arms crossed, but relaxed. “We crushed that dance.”
“Yeah, yeah. Thanks,” Nami smiled and took the money.
Back on Sunny,
The sun was dipping low, casting a warm golden glow over the deck of the Thousand Sunny. The crew had gathered around the dinner table as the sea breeze drifted lazily past. Sanji was in the kitchen, casually slicing vegetables with rhythmic precision, while Zoro sat nearby with his legs kicked up on the bench, sipping sake and occasionally glancing toward the stove with a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
To anyone else, it would look like the usual quiet evening—except for the fact that Sanji kept slipping Zoro pieces of food to “taste” with barely a grumble, and Zoro didn’t complain once. Not even when Sanji wiped a bit of sauce off his chin with a thumb.
It was weird. Too weird.
Usopp leaned forward, eyeing them like a detective. “Okay... The competition’s over. You won. Why are you two still acting like a couple?”
Chopper tilted his head, puzzled. “Didn’t Nami say you were just pretending? Are you still pretending now?”
Zoro raised an eyebrow and didn’t even bother looking up from his cup. “Who said we were pretending?”
Sanji didn’t miss a beat. “We’ve been dating for two years.”
SILENCE.
The sound of Brook’s violin died mid-note. Usopp dropped his cup. Chopper made a high-pitched noise and fainted off the bench. Franky choked on his cola. Robin, ever composed, closed her book slowly and raised a brow in approval.
Luffy’s eyes widened. He dropped the half-eaten pineapple from his mouth.
“HUH?!”
“WHAT?” Nami stood up so fast her chair scraped the deck. She slammed her palms on the table. “YOU MEAN TO TELL ME—YOU TWO—WERE ACTUALLY DATING THIS WHOLE TIME?!”
Zoro took another sip. “Yeah.”
Sanji looked far too smug. “Surprise.”
Nami looked between them in disbelief, then turned on her heel and pointed an accusatory finger at Sanji. “You mean to tell me I wasted my once-in-a-lifetime, perfect strategy entry on you two IDIOTS who didn’t even TELL me you were an ACTUAL couple?!”
Sanji gave her a polite smile. “You got your money though, didn’t you?”
“THAT’S NOT THE POINT!” she snapped. “I could’ve entered anyone! I could’ve seduced a town bachelor! I could’ve WON twice!”
Zoro gave her a sideways glance. “Why didn’t you just enter yourself?”
“BECAUSE I THOUGHT YOU TWO WOULD LOSE!”
Robin leaned back in her chair, a soft chuckle escaping her lips. “Well, they certainly fooled everyone, didn’t they?”
Brook nodded, tapping his skull thoughtfully. “Yohohoho! They danced better than any couple I’ve ever seen—dead or alive.”
Usopp was still frozen in his chair. “So... all those arguments... the insults... the fighting... That was just couple stuff?!”
Sanji shrugged. “Some of it. I mean, he is annoying.”
Zoro rolled his eyes. “You’re more annoying.”
Sanji winked. “You love it.”
“Unfortunately.”
Nami pinched the bridge of her nose. “So all the dramatic eye contact and the weird tension and Sanji giving Zoro his last cup of coffee this morning... That wasn’t just a weird moment?!”
“I always give him the last cup,” Sanji said.
“And I don’t share sake,” Zoro added, “except with him.”
Chopper came to and blinked. “You guys are actually... in love?”
There was a pause. The kind of pause that hinted at something real.
Sanji looked over his shoulder at Zoro.
Zoro gave a small grunt, then looked at the crew. “It’s not your business, really. But yeah.”
Sanji smiled and leaned casually on the counter, chin in his palm. “Zoro is not great at the mushy stuff, so he doesn't like showing his love to me in public, but... yeah. We’re together.”
"Hey, I'm here you know."
Luffy grinned. “That’s awesome!”
Usopp gawked. “I just—so all the threats to kill each other were...?”
“Foreplay,” Robin murmured with a smirk.
Zoro choked on his sake.
“Robin Dear!!” Sanji shouted, flushing bright red.
“Oh my god,” Nami groaned. “I’m surrounded by lunatics.”
Sanji walked over to Nami and gave her a cheeky wink. “Still, thanks for the date, Nami. We had a wonderful time.”
Zoro walked past and casually pointed to the prize money in her hands. “Split it how you want. You earned it... kind of.”
“Don’t think this means I forgive you for hiding it from me!” Nami shouted after them.
Zoro turned his head slightly. “Don’t think we were hiding it. You just weren’t looking.”
“Bastards,” she muttered—but a smile tugged at her lips.
Bouns,
"So, Zoro. Is Sanji really the boss in your relationship?" Usopp asked.
"No,"
"What did you say, Moss?" Sanji puts up a "friendly" smile.
"Yes, the cook is the boss." Zoro signed.
