None of Us Are Actors

Summary:

Immediately following the events of episode 5, Legs and Cleo have a chat.

Notes:

Thank you to @HurricaneWillow for convincing me to get an ao3 invite just to post this fic. And also for beta-ing.

Work Text:

After Apo's "banishment", and the terrible acting done by her fellow townsmembers; after taking a sip from Sausage, Cleo walks up to the doctor.

"Doctor," They greet

"Cleo."

"What are you playing at?"

"Not here," He responds

She nods. Doctor Legundo and Farmer Vampire Cleo make their way out of town.

In a different point of view, someone watches the two vampires leave, but doesn't tell anyone.

The two "vampires" trek through the forest and drop into a wide cave in the forest floor. Legundo pushes open a rock door expertly hidden in the cave's wall. Cleo follows him but stops just short of entering the hideout.

"Ah." the doctor realises. "Come in."

Cleo enters the hideout, and turns her whole body to face him.

"And for the record, you're always welcome here, even when I'm not here," He continues.

They make a sound of gratitude, but say nothing else.

Once he has put the door back in place, she speaks.

"You're not a vampire."

"I... am not." He admits. "Care to explain how you know?"

"Vampires can tell who new vampires are."

"Ah."

"When someone gets turned, we get a... sense of where they are. Only two people got turned in the last two days, and you aren't either of them."

"Only two?"

"Mhm."

"Drift, naturally."

"Yep."

"And the other one?"

"And... and Avid."

"Avid!?"

"Mhm."

"So it's both of them, then."

"Seems like it."

"Wonderful. Just wonderful. All this progress, and we've still got vampires pretending to be human."

"And humans pretending to be vampires now, too."

They stare in silence for a moment, each expecting the other to continue the conversation.

Legs sighs. "It was a neccesary sacrifice. What are you going to do?"

"I want to know, why you thought this was a good idea."

"It's like you said, if you were a vampire you would turn me."

"You're not gonna fool the vampires."

"I-"

"They already know who's been turned when."

"I don't need to fool the vampires. I just need to fool the townsfolk. Just for a little bit. Just to prove that you're- that we're just the same as anybody else."

Cleo stares at him for a good few minutes, then makes to leave.

"I'll keep your secret for now, Doc."

I hope this becomes worth it, they don't say.

"Thank you."

I hope so too.

With that, the vampire leaves the doctor's hideout, while up above a much older vampire sneaks away.
