Chapter Text
It’s a few hours later when a sense of calm finally sets over the freezing woods. Marks heart has started to beat again, Meredith has located Derek, Callie finally fell asleep long enough for Christina to use the tourniquet properly, and most are asleep. All except Cristina and Meredith, sitting around a dying fire, “do you think they’ll ever find us?” Asks Cristina, Meredith hits her arm,
”don’t talk like that.” She says half playful, half dead serious,
“besides its only been…” she takes out her watch,
“6 hours” her voice slowly loses its hopefulness
“Exactly” says Cristina, but she doesn’t sound happy about it. They sit in silence for a while, observing the woodsy noises, lost in thought, finally Meredith speaks up, “should we check on Callie and mark?” She Asks
“Shit. I completely forgot” Christina responds, standing up.
She takes Mark’s pulse, slower than last she checked and highly irregular, but she doesn’t dare try to mess with it again, it’s already stopped 3 times in the last 2 hours. Next she moves on to Callie, slowly unwrapping the bandages, then she sees them, bugs. Some nestled inside the infected flesh, others crawling on top, “shit” Cristina says plainly.
“What?” Calls Meredith, Cristina doesn’t want to risk shouting, so not to worry or awaken Callie. She calls Meredith over hurriedly,
“Shit” repeats Meredith once she sees the wound, in a matter of minutes, they have a game plan.
“Meredith” says cristina, going over the plan one last time,
“im going to use your tweezers to pull out the bugs” she shuttered internally at the thought, “you’re going to have to hold her down, if… no, when she wakes up. Also you need to keep her quiet, we don’t need everyone to wake up and freak out, and… I think that’s it, can you pass me the hand sanitizer?” Meredith looks concerned
“You’re going to use hand sanitizer…to sterilize….that wound?”
“Yeah, its not going to be pretty”
Almost as soon as the sterilizer touched her skin Callie was inconsolable from the pain. But to her credit, she stayed relatively quiet, tears streaming down her cheeks. Right before she passed out, she asked Christina to put her out of her missery, “ Christina. Please, just-” a sob escaped her lips “just-kill me” then she passed out, only to awake hours later an a helicopter, or maybe a plane? She couldn’t tell.
When she awoke she all she could make sense of is the fact that she had been drugged, because a sense of calm was overtaking her, so much so that she wondered if she was even supposed to be awake. On the other hand Mark knew for a fact he had not been drugged, he knew that it would put his heart under too much stress, for a matter of fact, being awake was putting his heart under too much stress. In a matter of minutes they both were passed out again.
Callie woke up slowly, her eyelids fluttering sluggishly, her eyes remaining glassy. Whatever she was on in the helicopter was nothing to the high level of pain meds she was on now. She caught sight of Arizona and called softly to her, “Arizona” she called in a voice barely above a whisper.
Arizona rushed over to her, grabbing her hand in relief, “Callie” she sighed in relief. Then she could hear somebody in the hallway, arguing.
“What-“ Callie swallowed, throat still dry from intubation, “what are they talking about”
A look of apprehention crossed Arizonas face, “Ill tell you later”
Callie looked at her with total focus “no. tell me now, your scaring me, Arizona” then Callie looked terrified, she quickly pulled the blanket off her leg, and was relieved to find it still there,
“Thank god” she muttered, putting her hand over her heart.
“About that-“ Arizona started, before a large group of doctors came in the room.
‘Whatever it is can wait” she thought to herself before pressing the pain pump and watching her world fade to black
