I think my new neighbor might not be human
nightingale — Tuesday, 17 February 2015, 3:19am

Okay, I know this sounds crazy. Or maybe it doesn't, because you're all supernatural enthusiasts like I am, so you're used to this kind of thing. I don't know.

Let me start from the beginning.

Last week, someone moved into the house next-door to me that's been empty for almost a full year now. It's got some structural issues, I don't know exactly what the issues are but I know the owners have had a hard time selling it — or, previous owners, I guess. Anyway, I didn't even see the guy move in. I just assume he showed up last week because that was the first time I saw him around. He never brought a moving truck, as far as I'm aware, and he didn't, like, come introduce himself or anything. Not that he's expected to, but it would have been nice, you know? But he didn't. The only reason I know he exists is that he dragged his garbage can out to the street at 3am last Tuesday, and the noise scared the absolute shit out of me.

And then I didn't see him for a week. I almost thought I hallucinated the whole thing, except he did it again just now. At 3am. That's not normal, right? And he's got this really pale skin with this faint, blue tone to it… I don't know, it could just be a trick of the light since I only see the guy in the middle of the night. Maybe he's just sick or something. Now that I'm typing all this out, I feel like I'm making a mountain out of a molehill (or a supernatural being out of an insomniac).

What do you think, though? It's weird, right? His whole demeanor just screams non-human, and I'm no expert or anything, but I have been into this stuff my whole life, so I feel like my instincts are pretty good.

Re: I think my new neighbor might not be human
knightofboreas — Tuesday, 17 February 2015, 7:42am

Hi Nightingale,

You've come to the right place! We Lightkeepers — that's what we call members of this forum, by the way — take things like this very seriously. It sounds like your instincts might be telling you this guy is bad news, but your evidence isn't quite up to the standards needed to properly identify a supernatural creature. Have you seen any other strange behaviors? Any unexplained phenomena in the area?

Enthused to hear any updates you may have.

Re: I think my new neighbor might not be human
curatoriumofsecrets — Tuesday, 17 February 2015, 8:26am

Please, Boreas, don't encourage these kinds of posts. This is a forum for serious discussions about the supernatural, not a Facebook group in which one can spew a whole lot of nothing for shits and giggles.

Nightingale, come back to us when you have something of interest to bring to the table.

Okay this time I really think something is going on
nightingale — Thursday, 19 February 2015, 1:31am

A few days ago, I posted on here about my new next-door neighbor, wondering if I was crazy for thinking he wasn't human. I'll admit that my evidence at the time was flimsy at best, okay? I shouldn't have jumped the gun like that.

I still think I was right, though. This guy only comes outside at night. It's literally like he's allergic to the sun or something. I've been paying attention for the last two days, and when I say this guy doesn't exist in the daytime, I mean it; no one ever comes to the door when the mailman comes by, so his mail and packages pile up all day (this guy orders a LOT of shit) and then his door opens around midnight and he collects it all like a dragon hoarding gold or something.

Is being nocturnal enough of a reason to be concerned?

Re: Okay this time I really think something is going on
moonch4nter — Thursday, 19 February 2015, 2:18am

Perhaps he works at night? There are some careers that require unusual sleep schedules, I wouldn't discount this as a possibility just yet.

Re: Okay this time I really think something is going on
nightingale — Thursday, 19 February 2015, 2:27am

He doesn't leave, though. I don't even think he has a car. The only time I see him leave the house is to get his mail, take his trash out (and he has a lot of that, too), or fiddle with the birdhouses in his back yard. All at night. Never when the sun is up.

Re: Okay this time I really think something is going on
moonch4nter — Thursday, 19 February 2015, 2:44am

He could just be eclectic. There's no reason to assume the worst.

Re: Okay this time I really think something is going on
curatoriumofsecrets — Thursday, 19 February 2015, 3:09am

Moonchanter has a point. There are probably more weirdos in the world than there are supernatural creatures posing as humans.

You got in my head…
nightingale — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 12:24pm

I was going to let this go. Really. But I couldn't stop thinking about Krumkake's point about the vampiric nature of it all, so I did some digging.

This morning, I waited until the sun had been up for a few hours already, and then I went over there to poke around. I knocked on the door, but there was no answer, of course. I even spam-rang the doorbell. Nothing.

Now, I feel like it's important to note that this guy always has his curtains closed. At all times. I've never seen a single window without these black curtains blocking the view since he moved in. But this morning, there was a crack in one of them, like a little sliver where the curtains didn't quite line up next to each other, and… I have to admit I was curious. I peeked inside.

He doesn't have a single piece of furniture in there aside from this one really old chest of drawers that looks like it's from the 1600s or something. I could only see into the living room, but there was no couch, no TV, no coffee table, no evidence of life whatsoever. Just that chest of drawers. I swear, something is going on.

Re: You got in my head…
moonch4nter — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 12:55pm

That is odd… When did you say he moved in?

Re: You got in my head…
nightingale — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 1:27pm

More than a week ago, now.

Re: You got in my head…
missdragonlord — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 1:33pm

The probability of a well-adjusted human adult living furniture-less for a full week is very low. Maybe his moving truck got lost on the way?

Re: You got in my head…
nightingale — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 1:54pm

Maybe…

Re: You got in my head…
krumkakeluvr — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 2:12pm

If you really wanna know if he's a vampire, just go over there at night and see if he bites you! You're usually awake anyway, right? Then at least you'll know for sure.

Re: You got in my head…
knightofboreas — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 2:28pm

Haha, there's no reason to endanger yourself, Nightingale. If you'd like a more concrete way to tell whether your neighbor is a vampire, try hiding garlic around his property or putting something made of pure silver on his doorstep. See what happens. This way, you'll be able to tell if he has a negative reaction from the comfort of your own home!

Re: You got in my head…
nightingale — Sunday, 22 February 2015, 2:41pm

That's a great idea. Thank you.

This is getting weirder
nightingale — Monday, 23 February 2015, 2:16am

Hey, it's me again. My neighbor is not a vampire. I left a silver candlestick on his front step yesterday so he'd see it when he came out to pick up his packages tonight, and he picked it up with his bare hands and examined it for a good 5 seconds before bringing it inside.

HOWEVER. About an hour after that, I noticed this eerie blue light floating around in his back yard, sort of flitting around among his bird feeders and the flowers growing along the fence. At first I thought it was a candle, but the flame was much too big for that. Maybe a lantern? Is that possible?? But it also seemed… sentient. Aware of its surroundings. Seriously, like it was moving with intent. Could it have been a specter or something? A spirit?

I don't know, maybe I'm just seeing things. Admittedly I haven't been getting much sleep.

Re: This is getting weirder
columbinahyposelenia — Monday, 23 February 2015, 2:29am

How interesting. It could have been a will-o'-the-wisp?

Re: This is getting weirder
moonch4nter — Monday, 23 February 2015, 2:41am

I agree, that's what it sounds like to me. Fire specters can take the shape of many different sources of fire according to some legends, and there are tales of will-o'-wisps manifesting as people carrying lanterns that would lead people both to danger and treasure, depending on the myth. Perhaps your neighbor is a friend of the unknown.

Re: This is getting weirder
nightingale — Monday, 23 February 2015, 2:53am

Maybe… Something about this still seems fishy to me. The color of the flame was, like, the exact color of the guy's hair.

Re: This is getting weirder
columbinahyposelenia — Monday, 23 February 2015, 3:14am

Then perhaps your neighbor is a specter himself. How exciting.

Re: This is getting weirder
krumkakeluvr — Monday, 23 February 2015, 7:45am

I say you go introduce yourself. Imagine being friends with a specter!

Honestly, I might.

I did it
nightingale — Tuesday, 24 February 2015, 6:58am

I bit the bullet. This morning, around 1:00am, I went over and met my neighbor.

Honestly I think he was just shocked anyone was knocking on his door at 1 in the morning, which, yeah. Is probably a weird thing to do. But I just told him I had knocked during the day a few times (barely a lie, okay?) and he was never home, and I noticed him out and about at this hour sometimes. He seemed amused by the fact that I had been paying attention. It sort of seemed like he doesn't get much social interaction.

The weird thing is — actually, okay, a lot of this is weird, but the new weird thing — he was actually really personable. And charming. Like, he could really hold a conversation, you know? Which seems odd considering the fact that he's nocturnal and never leaves his property. He even went as far as to ask me about myself, where I'm from, how long I've lived here, what I do for a living. Basic stuff, I know, but he really seemed like he cared to know the answers.

Are specters usually this friendly?

Re: I did it
krumkakeluvr — Tuesday, 24 February 2015, 7:32am

YAY!!! YOU MET HIM!!!!!!!! Now you can have a supernatural best friend!!!!!!

Re: I did it
missdragonlord — Tuesday, 24 February 2015, 7:38am

Well, hang on a moment, Krumkake. There is a high likelihood that Nightingale's neighbor is not, in fact, a specter.

Historically, specters don't interact much with humans outside of specific circumstances, which would support the theory, but their communication leaves much to be desired. If this man was as well-spoken and conversational as Nightingale says, I wouldn't put my money on him being a will-o'-wisp.

More insane than a vampire? Than a will-o'-wisp?

This time it was an accident
nightingale — Friday, 27 February 2015, 3:12am

Neighbor guy back again with an update. I actually did not mean to run into him tonight, but I'm glad I did, because I got to ask him some more questions and dig a little deeper.

TL;DR I was out late tonight for a coworker's birthday, so I didn't get home until around 1:30. When I was pulling into my garage, my neighbor happened to come out of his front door at the same time and saw me, so he waved. I waved back. I was going to go inside through the door that leads directly from the garage to the living room, like I usually do, but something told me I should go around the front this time. I don't know, a gut feeling. So I walk back out to the driveway and my neighbor (let's call him F) is still standing there on his front porch, maybe waiting for me? Or waiting for something, I'm not sure. He waves at me again, so I wander over to the fence between our yards to say hi, and he meets me there with this little smile on his face, like he's genuinely happy to see me.

We made casual conversation for a bit — you know, how was your day, what do you think of these winds we've been having, that kind of thing — and then I managed to turn the topic around to being up late, and he asked me what I was up to at this time of night. I told him about my coworkers and my job (I'm an electrician) and he asked if I could help him with the lamp over his front door. I said yes, went to grab my tools, and fixed it pretty quickly, and man, the smile he had on his face…

I haven't felt that appreciated in a long time.

Re: This time it was an accident
theemarionette — Friday, 27 February 2015, 3:52am

Okay, first of all, that was the longest TL;DR I've ever read. Do you know what TL;DR stands for? Too long, didn't read. And honestly, I almost didn't read all of this. I wish I hadn't.

Second of all, what info did you actually get?? It sounds like you just talked about yourself the whole time and then fixed his lamp.

Re: This time it was an accident
moonch4nter — Friday, 27 February 2015, 4:01am

And maybe developed a little crush…

Re: This time it was an accident
nightingale — Friday, 27 February 2015, 4:19am

What? No, I don't have a crush on my weird neighbor. He's just really nice.

Now that you mention it, though, I did ask him some questions about his life, but somehow the conversation always pivoted back to me… I didn't realize he never answered any of my questions properly until right now.

Huh.

Re: This time it was an accident
knightofboreas — Friday, 27 February 2015, 4:28am

What do you mean, properly?

Re: This time it was an accident
nightingale — Friday, 27 February 2015, 4:43am

Well, for example, at one point I asked him what he did for work that allowed him to be up so late all the time, and he just kind of laughed and said he could never work a 9-5. I agreed, and he asked me what my work hours are like, and it devolved from there.

He's so easy to talk to I guess I just didn't notice.

Re: This time it was an accident
theemarionette — Friday, 27 February 2015, 4:56am

Classic.

Re: This time it was an accident

What does?

Re: This time it was an accident
theemarionette — Friday, 27 February 2015, 5:20am

Are you stupid? That he's a fairy. They're known for talking in circles and never revealing anything about themselves, obviously.

Re: This time it was an accident
nightingale— Friday, 27 February 2015, 5:34am

What if he's just really selfless?

missdragonlord — Friday, 27 February 2015, 5:58am

Unlikely, but possible.

Re: This time it was an accident
columbinahyposelenia — Friday, 27 February 2015, 6:12am

I suppose you'll just have to keep investigating.

It keeps happening!
nightingale — Monday, 2 March 2015, 5:19am

I promise I'm trying. I really am. But every time I talk to F he just turns the spotlight back on me. I've been trying to tell whether it's, like, in a sneaky fae way or just in a nice person way, and I'm losing my mind. Sometimes he gets this glint in his eye when he changes the topic that's like whimsical and a little impish, and I think maybe he really is a fairy, but then he'll say something totally normal and well-adjusted and I'm back to square one.

Is there a sure-fire way to tell? What do I do here? Help!

Re: It keeps happening!
ashrubiggestfan — Monday, 2 March 2015, 5:22am

Wait, what's this about a real-life fairy??? Sorry, I'm new here, I'm not caught up on the lore. Can someone summarize?

Re: It keeps happening!
curatoriumofsecrets — Monday, 2 March 2015, 5:37am

Essentially, Nightingale has a unique next-door neighbor who's exhibiting some signs of a supernatural nature. We're trying to figure out whether he's fae, something else, or just an oddball of a human man.

So far, evidence includes a mysterious blue light, a bizarre sleep schedule, and… flirting.

Re: It keeps happening!
nightingale — Monday, 2 March 2015, 5:49am

It's not flirting!

Re: It keeps happening!
ashrubiggestfan — Monday, 2 March 2015, 5:56am

I don't know, I feel like I never know when people are flirting with me. Or if they are. I don't actually know if anyone ever does, though I'm sure SOMEONE has at some point in my life. Probably, right? Anyway, maybe you're just not picking up what he's putting down?

Re: It keeps happening!
missdragonlord — Monday, 2 March 2015, 6:03am

I'm sure someone has flirted with you before, Ashru. :)

Re: It keeps happening!

Ugh, a real flesh-and-blood fairy would be so much cooler than a romance subplot.

I agree! There is no romance subplot!

He brought me flowers…
nightingale — Saturday, 7 March 2015, 10:46am

Sorry for no updates for a few days, things have been crazy. There was a winter storm that blew through my town, and keeping up with shoveling snow and stuff has been a hassle.

Somehow, though, amidst all the chaos, I've still been talking to F every night.

It was normal at first, and I was even beginning to think I made everything up and maybe he is just a night owl, but then last night, he knocked on MY door. For the first time ever. With a potted yellow pansy in his hands! It's the beginning of March! And snowing! What am I supposed to do with that?

It has to be a fae thing, right? Home Depot doesn't sell flowers like that at this time of year, and there's NO way his flowers in the back yard survived the storm. Where else could he have gotten it? Now I'm nervous. What if he knows I'm suspicious of him?

Re: He brought me flowers…
krumkakeluvr — Saturday, 7 March 2015, 11:37am

AWWWWWW!!!! Okay I'm invested in the romance subplot now. As long as he's still a fairy, too.

Re: He brought me flowers…
nightingale — Saturday, 7 March 2015, 11:41am

The flowers don't MEAN anything you guys, why isn't anyone commenting on the fact that he got perfectly in-bloom pansies in MARCH?

Re: He brought me flowers…
curatoriumofsecrets — Saturday, 7 March 2015, 11:50am

To be fair, he could have had them inside. Or bought them from a florist who imports flowers all year long. I don't think this is evidence of him being fae.

Re: He brought me flowers…
knightofboreas — Saturday, 7 March 2015, 12:01pm

Just evidence of him being quite the gentleman, if you ask me.

Re: He brought me flowers…

I think Nightingale is just in denial.

I may be in over my head
nightingale — Tuesday, 10 March 2015, 6:01am

I went over to F's house tonight to try to see if I could find anything unusual. I didn't know if he would let me in, but he did, and his house is… incredibly normal. There's furniture now and everything. Even that one chest of drawers that was in there the last time I looked is gone — everything looks straight out of an Ikea display, I swear. It just looked like a house.

We talked for a while, and even ended up playing cards, which was fun. I think he's lonely.

He offered me a bite to eat, and I declined, of course, which he seemed to expect? He didn't even make a move toward the kitchen, not even when he offered me a glass of water. It's like he knew I was going to say no. I think he's suspicious of me — the whole time i was there (like 5 hours) he never took his eyes off me, and when I left, he walked me all the way back to my front door. That's weird, right? He definitely knows something's up…

I don't know, you guys. It seems like Nightingale has some valid concerns under all of this romance hullabaloo. It does feel a little fishy that F suddenly has all this furniture, no? Nightingale, did you see any moving trucks show up, or was F making any trips anywhere recently?

Damn, we scared him off.

Re: I may be in over my head

You didn't scare me off, I fell asleep.

Okay look. This guy is really kind, and funny, and charming, and, yeah, pretty good looking I guess, so maybe I have a little bit of a crush. A tiny one. But it doesn't matter because A) he's literally a supernatural creature and B) he doesn't like me back. I can't date a literal Eldritch horror, especially one who knows I know he's an Eldritch horror under all that perfect skin.

Okay, so I've been doing some investigating
nightingale — Friday, 20 March 2015, 10:27am

Hey, me again. In full honesty, I didn't plan to post about this on here anymore, because all you guys will tell me is that my neighbor is not fae, he's just a gay man, so I didn't want to waste my time anymore.

But now I have some real, solid proof.

In the last week and a half, I've been pulling out all the stops. I see him every night for a game or two of cards now, so we've been spending a lot of time together, and I've been noticing some things.

1) His house only has one mirror. The one above the sink in the bathroom. He doesn't have any in his bedroom as far as I can tell, and none in any hallways or the living room or anything. Plus, the one in the bathroom has these hooks hanging from the ceiling above it, which I'm sure are there so he can hang something over the mirror when he's alone.

2) The fridge is always stocked, but he never eats. I've never seen a plate in the drying rack, a fork in the sink, nothing. He doesn't drink water, either. Not when I'm there. He always offers me a snack and a water when I arrive, but I always say no, so I don't know who all the food is for. A distraction, maybe?

3) There's no dust anywhere. I've looked under the couch, behind picture frames (which, by the way, he has no family pictures, they're all just landscapes and sunsets), on top of doorways, and it's all spotless. All the time. There's no way a human man is keeping his house this clean.

4) He's been opening up a little more, but he still talks around any really specific questions I ask him. He's unwilling to share anything about his past. The only things he talks about freely are his collection of gems and stones, ancient coins, and modern art.

I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting, but I have never been more sure of it: my neighbor is fae, and anything that seems like flirting is just him trying to charm me into falling for his schemes.

Nightingale, have you considered that maybe he only doesn't eat or drink around you because you don't accept his offers of food or water? Perhaps he thinks it would be rude.

The mirror doesn't concern me, either. Lots of people are scared of what lies beyond the glass.

Okayyyy, way to be cryptic as hell, Columbina.

But I agree. None of this is selling me. I think he's just into you, for some reason.

What about the dust thing?

missdragonlord — Friday, 20 March 2015, 11:37am

You said he never leaves his house, maybe he just likes to clean.

krumkakeluvr — Friday, 20 March 2015, 11:43am

Yeah, and I also collect weird rocks I find all over the place. Does that make me a fairy too?

missdragonlord — Friday, 20 March 2015, 11:48am

This is true. Lots of people have interesting hobbies.

You guys have to be messing with me.

knightofboreas — Friday, 20 March 2015, 12:05pm

Yeah, honestly Nightingale, the more you talk about this, the less convinced I am. I feel like you would have some hard proof by now if he really was fae, what with all the time you guys spend together. Wink wink.

Maybe it's time to give up the hunt and just accept that you have a boyfriend now. And one hell of a convenient one, too.

Ugh.

I've got him this time
nightingale — Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 12:13am

I took F to this super fancy buffet tonight. All you can eat. Like, the fanciest restaurant in town. And this guy got a side salad.

Tell me that's not proof.

A SIDE SALAD?????

Re: I've got him this time
moonch4nter — Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 12:42am

Perhaps he's just shy about eating in front of people?

Re: I've got him this time
curatoriumofsecrets — Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 1:04am

That could be it. This whole thing is boring me now. Can't you just ask him if he's human and rip the bandaid off?

Re: I've got him this time
knightofboreas — Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 1:13am

Now there's an idea.

Re: I've got him this time
nightingale — Wednesday, 25 March 2015, 1:17am

You know what? Fine. I'll go ask him right now.

…Well?

Does anyone know what happened to that guy who was convinced his neighbor was fae?
ashrubiggestfan — Sunday, 3 May 2015, 2:19pm

I feel like he said he was gonna go confront his neighbor and then never came back.

Re: Does anyone know what happened to that guy who was convinced his neighbor was fae?
krumkakeluvr — Sunday, 3 May 2015, 2:37pm

Yeah, he never filled us in on what happened!

DELETED????

Maybe he was wrong, and was too embarrassed to tell us the truth.

Or maybe he was killed by the fae.

Who knows?

I don't think those are the only two options.

AITA for ragebaiting my boyfriend so hard he ran into a door?
kyryllingmyself — Thursday, 14 May 2015, 4:46am

I've been dating my boyfriend for about two months now. We met when I moved in next door to him, and he started stalking me (lightly) to find out if I was a vampire or something since I keep odd hours. Ever since then, I like to play jokes on him in that regard, poking fun at the fact that he thought I was a supernatural creature for many weeks before we started dating, and that his investigation is what actually brought us closer together.

Regardless, today I may have taken it too far. I accidentally scared him so badly he ran right into the front door. AITA?
