i cant believe shane hollander and ilya rozanov are both centaurs at the same time. if you told me that five years ago i would have called a doctor to perform a wellness check

i dont know how to explain that the cens used to be so unbelievably cursed that hollanov being married is actually less surprising than them playing on my team
Denis Alderman ☑️ @DenisAlderman
The official roster for the National Team Orientation Camp should be made public tomorrow. I’m told there have been a lot of conversations internally and even some last minute invites.
↳ dan 🏒 @twinkshane
will shane be there. denis will shane be there
Denis Alderman ☑️ @DenisAlderman
I’m hearing that 44 players have been invited for the men’s team. Reminder that only 25 players can make the team in January.

Some mixed feelings about the orientation camp roster (we’ll get into it on the pod!) but just want to remind everyone else feeling concerned that the actual team can include guys who weren’t at orientation!
Julia Prior ☑️ @JuliaPriorESPN
Attending Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp from the Bears are Cliff Marlow and the 2021 Calder Trophy winner Finn Matkovic.
em 🧸 matty roty @cubkovic
and when shane hollander adopts matty as his hockey daughter and they play perfect hockey together and we experience peace on earth, then what

The Neutral Zone S05E05: No Thanks, 41:22
Tyler Kudirka: And, lastly, they’ve finally announced the roster for the Team Canada orientation camp. Any idea why this took so long, Denis? The camp is next week.
Denis Alderman: I’m told there’s been a lot of debate internally about who warranted an invite.
Tyler Kudirka: I mean, it’s only orientation. No harm in having a couple extra guys kicking around, right?
Denis Alderman: …I think it was a little bit more about… maybe leaving off some players who have earned the right to be there, but might rock the boat a little. Maybe some personal feelings clouding judgement.
Tyler Kudirka: Denis.
Denis Alderman: It’s been a while since the NHL was at the Olympics. They don’t want to be making decisions based on what worked eight years ago. Previous selection doesn’t guarantee future selection. And there are conversations about team cohesion; a lot of them haven’t played together before.
Tyler Kudirka: These are the best of the best, Denis, these guys should be fully capable of developing chemistry with each other.
Denis Alderman: And I’m told that was also what the management group ultimately concluded. There just were questions first.
Tyler Kudirka: So they ended up on the roster, the players in question?
Denis Alderman: They did.
Tyler Kudirka: Can you tell me who?
Denis Alderman: Look Tyler… There were a lot of questions. There are still a lot of questions about this player from last season.
Tyler Kudirka: Denis. Tell me it wasn’t Hollander.
Denis Alderman: I can’t tell you that.
Tyler Kudirka: Holy– [bleep]. Are you kidding?
Denis Alderman: I’m not.
Tyler Kudirka: What kind of mickey mouse operation do they think they’re running? Shane Hollander? Three-time Stanely Cup winner? Conn Smythe, Hart trophy, Ted Lindsay winner? The guy who captained them last Olympics?
Denis Alderman: I know. But he’s there, so obviously, they made the right decision in the end.
Tyler Kudirka: Team cohesion. They–they’re asking questions about whether, what, guys will be uncomfortable with a gay player in the room? At the [bleep]-ing Olympics?
Denis Alderman: We’re a professional show, Tyler, simmer down a little.
Tyler Kudirka: I– sorry. No, sorry, you’re right. But, Denis, it’s the Olympics. The Olympics. We should be bringing the best Canadian players, period. Not– not getting into playground clique politics.
Denis Alderman: I agree. But it’s a new situation, and they’re figuring out how to navigate it.
Tyler Kudirka: New that Hollander’s openly gay, I guess, but I’m pretty sure he was gay in 2014 too.
Denis Alderman: I–right. Yes, well, that’s true. Look, I just think… the news this spring and how all of that played out… was surprising to people. I think the hockey world is still not sure what the outcome is, in terms of play.
Tyler Kudirka: Denis, that’s– look, okay, first of all, I disagree with the argument in principle, because I don’t know why Hollander or Rozanov would play any differently than they have their entire careers, but also, Rozanov isn’t going to be on Team Canada. It’s just Hollander. Who is just as gay as he was in 2014.
Denis Alderman: It’s an adjustment, Tyler, that’s all. And there were… I don’t want to accuse anyone of unprofessionalism, but I think some personal feelings and relationships got involved for a bit. You have to remember that Pascal Grenier, who’s GM for the Voyageurs, is part of the Hockey Canada management group and recently felt… embarrassed by how things played out.
Tyler Kudirka: …It would be a national embarrassment if Grenier’s ego kept Hollander off the team. That could cost us a podium spot.
Denis Alderman: Yes, well, Hockey Canada and the management group made the right decision in the end. They’ll talk to guys at orientation, they’ll get the group together, they’ll watch how the season unfolds, and they’ll make the right call in December. They want to win. They’ll pick a team that they think can win.
Tyler Kudirka: I sure hope they do, Denis. Okay. Jesus. Sorry, okay, well, we were going to talk about what I thought the actual surprise on this roster was, which is leaving off Atwood in favour of Drapeau…

December
The Neutral Zone S05E39: Holly Jolly, 05:06
Tyler Kudirka: Okay, now, for our last show before the holiday break, we promised we’d have a little bit of fun.
Denis Alderman: We did, Tyler. I enjoyed putting this together, I’ll tell you that.
Tyler Kudirka: Today, we are projecting Olympic rosters! Now, obviously, this is all in good fun, we don’t know anything–or, if Denis does, he’s pretending he doesn’t–so don’t take this too seriously.
Denis Alderman: And also a reminder that the official Olympic roster will be named on December 31st, but it’ll still be subject to change pending injury.
Tyler Kudirka: Absolutely. Okay, we have about four teams to go through, so how about I read my Canada roster, you agree or disagree, and then tell me the differences, and then we’ll switch and you’ll read your USA, and vice versa.
Denis Alderman: Sounds like a plan.
Tyler Kudirka: Okay, I’ll start with the forwards. Canada will probably bring fourteen. I’ve started with what should be the easiest choice, in my opinion, the one and only Shane Hollander.
Denis Alderman: Hmm.
Tyler Kudirka: …Denis. Denis, do you like being attacked on Twitter?
Denis Alderman: No! No, look, I do also have him on my list–
Tyler Kudirka: Right.
Denis Alderman: –but I don’t know if he’s the shoe-in you think he is.
Tyler Kudirka: The– He has 30 points, Denis. In fifteen games. I know there was weirdness around orientation camp and Grenier’s feelings, but surely he’s more than proved himself. Unless Hockey Canada is being run by, like, deaf-blind dinosaurs, there’s no reason to leave him off!
Denis Alderman: There’s concern–
Tyler Kudirka: Is it the [bleep]-ing gay thing again, Denis? Is it the homophobia?
Denis Alderman: Will you let me finish? It’s not that, it’s not that simple. They’re looking at how things ended in Montreal–not the trip! Not the playoff trip, okay, don’t jump me–but Hollander losing the room. There’s gonna be at least one Voyageur on the team–
Tyler Kudirka: Boiziau was at Hollander and Rozanov’s wedding!
Denis Alderman: Right, sure, but Grenier is very high on Drapeau and Couilliard. As I was saying, they look at the end of Hollander’s tenure as captain and are questioning whether he’s the right pick to captain this Olympic team.
Tyler Kudirka: …What?
Denis Alderman: It’s just a question! He’s been captain before, but they didn’t get the result they wanted–
Tyler Kudirka: Oh, god forbid you win an Olympic silver medal.
Denis Alderman: –and there are other guys who have grown since then. So then the question becomes, can they name Hollander to the team without making him captain?
Tyler Kudirka: This is genuinely absurd, Denis. Hollander is just fine under a different captain in Ottawa. He’s not some, like, aggressive, posturing alpha male.
Denis Alderman: Well, it’s a little different in Ottawa, his relationship to the captain.
Tyler Kudirka: It really does always come back to the gay thing, doesn’t it?
Denis Alderman: It’s not– There are other factors at play, Tyler. But, as you have pointed out, I also think the concerns are overblown, I think Hollander is a necessary cornerstone of this team, and he will do just fine whether or not he’s the captain.
Tyler Kudirka: I– Jesus. Okay. Merry Christmas, everyone. This is the holiday show. Okay, the second guy I’m projecting for Team Canada is James Matheson, who I assume, as a reigning Stanley Cup winner, is not a controversial take?
Denis Alderman: No, that’s an easy pick.
Tyler Kudirka: Great! Great. Okay, next…

Hiebert (MIN) is being evaluated after he went down awkwardly in the second period vs. Nashville. Sounds like it might be the end of his Olympic aspirations.
Minnesota Nomads ☑️ @Nomads
Brandon Hiebert underwent successful surgery on a broken ankle this afternoon. He is expected to miss 8-10 weeks.
Tyler Kudirka ☑️ @neutralzonetyler
Obviously we feel for Hiebert - it’s tough to see a guy sidelined before the Olympics. That said, wondering who fills in for him on Team Canada. Gotta think the obvious choice is Ottawa’s Zane Boodram, but wouldn’t be surprised if they take a long look at Levi Preston in Houston too, given how he’s played the last two months, and of course Morrison.

The Neutral Zone S05E53: Laryngitis, 00:00
Tyler Kudirka: Hello everyone, I’m your host Tyler Kudirka. Welcome to an unusual episode of The Neutral Zone, and not just because it’s an Olympics episode. No, I’m sorry to say that my usual podcast companion has been struck by a bad case of laryngitis. Wishing you a swift recovery, Denis. However, I’m very excited to announce that, graciously filling in for Denis for the duration of the Olympics, is the one and only Julia Prior!
Julia Prior: Hi! Thank you so much for having me!
Tyler Kudirka: Thank you for being here! I’ve been such a fan for ages, I am so honoured to call you a friend, and I know the listeners are excited to hear from you for the next two weeks.
Julia Prior: That’s so kind, Tyler. I’m just glad to have a sightseeing buddy here. No, I’m kidding, this is so much more than that. You guys do good work here on The Neutral Zone. I’ve got big shoes to fill.
Tyler Kudirka: I’m sure you’ll manage it with aplomb.
Julia Prior: Well, with your help, it won’t be hard.
Tyler Kudirka: Ugh, I’m so excited. Okay, okay, we can’t just chat and have fun, although, you know, obviously Beijing is very cool so far, but maybe we can give our tourist update at the end of the pod.
Julia Prior: That’s probably the most productive structure.
Tyler Kudirka: What we should get into is that Team Canada have had their first practice.
Julia Prior: And Team USA’s starts in half an hour!
Tyler Kudirka: Yes, yes, we’ll pause the pod to watch. Don’t worry, everyone, we’ll cover it all. But, my question is, how are we feeling about the lines?
Julia Prior: I mean, I’m never opposed to trying things out in practice. Like, you don’t always know what will and won’t work without giving it a go.
Tyler Kudirka: For sure. But are we liking this first line of Matkovic, Matheson, and Doucet?
Julia Prior: I’m not convinced by it. I think– look. Clearly, they think Matheson is, like, their guy. He’s the captain, he’s going to set the style of play, the level of compete, all that. Do I think he’s the best guy for that role? Not really, but the ship has sailed and we’ve already beat the dead horse enough.
Tyler Kudirka: [laughs] Right, for sure.
Julia Prior: So, okay, Matheson as the first line center, it is what it is. I like him with Doucet on his left. I think their styles of play mesh well. They played together at the World Juniors in 2011, so they have some chemistry to fall back on. Is Doucet the best right winger on this team? No, but it makes sense to spread your talent out throughout the line up.
Tyler Kudirka: Very true. I think those two fit well together. But my problem–and if I’m reading between the lines correctly, I think maybe yours too–is that Matkovic is just not the fit with these two.
Julia Prior: Absolutely not! And that’s not for lack of skill, obviously. Look, I’ve watched every NHL game this kid has played. Matty is fast and cerebral, and Matheson is… methodical, I guess, is the nicest way I can find to put it. Responsible.
Tyler Kudirka: [snorts] Yeah. I’m surprised they haven’t tried Matkovic with Hollander, I feel like those are guys who play a similar game.
Julia Prior: I thought exactly the same. Genuinely. I was sittin’ there watching practice and waiting for them to finally do what seemed, just, so unbelievably obvious, and nothing.
Tyler Kudirka: Seems like a really egregious oversight, honestly. He’d fit right in with Hollander and Barrett.
Julia Prior: Yes! And meanwhile, I think they spent most of practice with Fleming? That seems like a clunky fit to me.
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah. They moved Brisebois up near the end of practice, and that worked better, but I just… Like, what are we missing? Put your guys who can fly together, put Matheson on a line with the other guys who are steady and responsible but not particularly swift, and then keep the third line as it is.
Julia Prior: [snorts] Yes. Oh yeah, unless it looks different in an actual game, let’s not touch the Boodram-Friesen-McIntosh connection. Those guys are, well, number one, a first line on almost any NHL team. Not just in terms of individual skill, but the chemmy?
Tyler Kudirka: Oh, far and away the most complete line. They’re clicking really well. I think Bood and Friesen played junior together, didn’t they?
Julia Prior: I’m just googling that now… Yes! They did. And obviously Friesen and McIntosh played together in Pittsburgh for a few months in 2019.
Tyler Kudirka: Yes, right, great stuff. Just a bunch of good, steady, responsible guys with a high offensive upside.
Julia Prior: They are! This is, look, this is a good team. Elite players. And this is just the first practice. Maybe the coaching staff see something we’re missing, maybe it’ll all click come game time. But there’s not a lot of time to figure that out. Canada’s in the same group as the United States.
Tyler Kudirka: They play them in five days!
Julia Prior: Exactly! So I’m… Look, we can’t make a judgement call till we see them in a game. But I’m a bit skeptical of the choices being made here so far.

Just a tough defensive breakdown there. Doucet looked great with Matheson, but he’s struggling to find where he fits beside St. Pierre. I think there’s potential there, they just don’t have the chemistry yet.
Tyler Kudirka ☑️ @neutralzonetyler
Never seen Hollander this vocal on the bench. He’s talking to everybody, pointing things out during the play, clapping guys on the back. Meanwhile Barrett and Matkovic are huddled over an ipad together every time they’re not on the ice. This line is cooking something.
Tyler Kudirka ☑️ @neutralzonetyler

Second period ends with Canada up 5-4. This is sloppy hockey from Canada, but I think there’s something bubbling beneath the surface. Obviously the first period was jarring, but they’re shaking it off and I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out even stronger in the third.

Hollander on the game: “Definitely less disciplined than we wanted. Seeing your captain go down like that in the first game is jarring. But we dug deep, found our game. Really proud of these guys. And obviously, we’re hoping for the best for Jimmy.”
Julia Prior ☑️ @JuliaPriorESPN
Asked Matkovic about the locker room in the first intermission, said the veteran alternate captains really stepped up. Shouted out Boodram as well.
Julia Prior ☑️ @JuliaPriorESPN
Quote: “This is a great leadership group. There are a lot of guys who could’ve been named captain, I think. But Hollander really stepped up. He just has such a calming presence in the locker room and on the bench, you know? That’s just a guy who knows exactly how he wants to go play hockey, and he makes it easy for you to do that too.”
shane’s pr manager @holly24
matkovic saying it’s easy to play with shane is kind of funny because famously shane is so good that lower caliber players often struggle to keep up but of course matty is just having fun
Cens Watch ☑️ @CensWatch
Rozanov was on TSN Radio this afternoon talking about the Canada game: “I think it is harder to play Olympic hockey than people really understand. And not even because of the bigger rink or whatever. It’s the pressure. We are used to playoff series in the NHL, so the single game elimination format is very scary.” 1/2
Cens Watch ☑️ @CensWatch
“...Even in the round robin, not a lot of room for error. Every win matters, how you win it matters, goal differential matters. Canada can pull out a gutsy win like that and they are already second in the group because the USA beat China 8-0 a few hours earlier. So, lots of pressure on these guys. Impressive win, after Matheson injury.” 2/2

It’s hard to take a win from a loss like this, but I genuinely don’t know if I’ve ever seen Hollander play like this. Obviously, his speed and IQ are always off the charts, but he’s bringing a new steadfast grittiness to every shift.
The Neutral Zone S05E55: Triple Axel, 21:46
Tyler Kudirka: Obviously, things aren’t over for Canada. You can lose one in the round robin.
Julia Prior: For sure. They’ll need to improve their goal differential though if they want to edge into the quarterfinal over Sweden or Finland, though.
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah. I mean, not the end of the world if they don’t, just means they have to get through the playoff round, but still to be avoided if possible.
Julia Prior: Considering they have China next, I wouldn’t be too worried.
Tyler Kudirka: No. Yeah, no, no offense to our gracious hosts, but that’s a team you could put up a ten spot on.
Julia Prior: Which they might need to do, if we’re honest, Tyler.
Tyler Kudirka: It would certainly help. How are we feeling about that Matkovic-Hollander-Barrett line?
Julia Prior: Regardless of the game we just watched, regardless of what my passport says, for my money, that’s the best line in this tournament.
Tyler Kudirka: By a country mile.
Julia Prior: Well, hold your horses. They’re the best, but the Kelly-Hunter-Vaughan line has some real firepower too.
Tyler Kudirka: Sure. How many goals do they have combined?
Julia Prior: Five.
Tyler Kudirka: And how many of those are from the game against China?
Julia Prior: [sighs] Three.
Tyler Kudirka: Right. And the Hollander line have six, and three of those are against the USA.
Julia Prior: It’s not a competition, Tyler.
Tyler Kudirka: It very literally is.
Julia Prior: Whatever, Matkovic is a Bear, I literally win either way.
Tyler Kudirka: [snorts] We love professional impartiality.
Julia Prior: Oh, okay, should we get into how Canada only had one effective scoring line against the US today?
Tyler Kudirka: Ugh, you joke, but we should talk about it…

The Neutral Zone S05E56: Elevated Cupcake Experience, 11:52
Tyler Kudirka: It’s gotta feel good for Canada to play a game like that after the drama of the last two, don’t you think?
Julia Prior: Definitely. Not a significant challenge, but a confidence booster. No offense to the home team here, but the 32nd ranked IIHF team versus the first is kind of…
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah… yeah, they say there aren’t easy wins in hockey, but this one was kind of a gimme. But I think they needed that.
Julia Prior: I think so too. Gave them a chance to settle in, to play on some more consistent lines in a game context.
Tyler Kudirka: Play a normal game where no one gets hurt.
Julia Prior: Yep. Pretty much as normal as an 11-0 hockey game can be.
Tyler Kudirka: [laughs] Well, yeah, that’s true. But good too to get guys going up and down the line up, right? Big Cliff Marlow goal, Fleming in on the action, Boiziau with two, all of that is helpful.
Julia Prior: Well, it gives you confidence, right? Makes a guy think, okay, I can score on Olympic ice, I can score off these linemates, or assist these linemates, we’re clicking.
Tyler Kudirka: Yep. And I think Nguyen drew in very effectively on that fourth line. Nice to see him get some game action.
Julia Prior: Yeah, I do wonder a little whether it was worth keeping Matheson in over Nguyen in the second game there, if maybe giving Matheson a chance to heal up would’ve been worth doing.
Tyler Kudirka: Ooh, you know, I have a text from Denis, actually, that’s probably relevant here.
Julia Prior: I love that he’s texting you his podcast thoughts. Not even laryngitis can keep him down.
Tyler Kudirka: Oh, he’s like a freaking bloodhound sometimes, sniffing out scoops. And if he finds something worth saying, he’s gonna bay.
Julia Prior: That’s what makes him good at the job!
Tyler Kudirka: Too true. Okay, from Denis, he says: “Don’t think the Matheson injuries are related. Two distinct issues. He thought he could skate through the first, but not the one he received in the game against the USA. Would’ve if he could. Warrior.”
Julia Prior: Oh, wow, okay. I knew the second injury was more knee related, but I just assumed the ankle reports from the first game were wrong.
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah. So, hard to fault anyone for dressing him in that game, in the end then. Just bad luck. But we were glad to see Nguyen play well…

Asked also about whether he was taking inspiration from his new captain in Ottawa: “Ilya is a great captain. Semi Final match ups are set! It’s Canada vs. ROC and USA vs. Finland
The Neutral Zone S05E57: Centaurs Club, 23:45
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah, Haas is really coming into his own. I think we’ve got to seriously consider that Switzerland might be contending for a medal next Olympics if he and Greninger can keep progressing at this rate.
Julia Prior: Well, I think that also relies on Sweden continuing to struggle, but anything can happen at the Olympics.
Tyler Kudirka: That’s a good point. Maybe Vancouver will unearth another Pettersson.
Julia Prior: Couldn’t hurt. Lars has been excellent for them and for Sweden.
Tyler Kudirka: Unfortunately, one guy does not a team make. But we should get into the upcoming semi-finals; Canada facing the Russian Olympic Committee team.
Julia Prior: Clunky name, those Russians, but not a clunky team.
Tyler Kudirka: No, they’ve been sharp this Olympics. You might have better insight here than I do though.
Julia Prior: Well, they’re captained by Dmitri Kovalev, former Bear, current Minnesota Nomad. Excellent winger, middling center when you ask him to be. He’s played his best hockey on Ilya Rozanov’s wing–
Tyler Kudirka: There are a lot of guys who can say that.
Julia Prior: –but of course, no Rozanov this Olympics.
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah, that’s… Obviously, that’s a bad look for the ROC, but expected, and certainly a decision that makes them worse.
Julia Prior: No question. It’s, I mean, Hollander spoke about it before the Olympics, he and Rozanov knew that in coming out, or being outed, as was the case, Rozanov would lose his chance at playing for Russia again.
Tyler Kudirka: For listeners not in the know, the Russian government has criminalized the, quote, promotion of homosexuality, and, following his wedding to Shane Hollander, Rozanov was disavowed by the Russian Olympic Committee. Which we–obviously–heartily condemn, and stand in solidarity with him and his husband.
Julia Prior: Yeah, really tough to see. We miss seeing Rozanov on Olympic ice.
Tyler Kudirka: We do. And, of course, without him, the ROC are weaker.
Julia Prior: They really are. The Russian hockey federation has been investing significantly in Russian hockey since Sochi, they don’t want a repeat of that embarrassment. They won gold in 2018, but that wasn’t considered a best-on-best tournament without the NHL in attendance. This is the year for redemption, and it was meant to be centered on the three-headed monster of Rozanov, Kovalev, and Ivan Bogrov. But instead, they have this gaping hole at first line center.
Tyler Kudirka: So rather than a powerhouse, we have a team that’s… approachable?
Julia Prior: I think so. Obviously, Canada are down Matheson, who’s as good a two-way forward as they come, but without the offensive terror that is Rozanov on the other side, that gap isn’t so concerning.
Tyler Kudirka: Right. It’ll still be a tough match, these are both excellent teams with excellent players.
Julia Prior: That they are. It could go either way. But without Rozanov, I think Canada has the edge.
Tyler Kudirka: Well, and I imagine it’s a bit personal for Hollander.
Julia Prior: Yeah. …Yeah, I wonder how much that’ll factor into his own mental preparation. It’s always been my impression that Shane Hollander works to keep his personal life separate from hockey, although that’s been harder the last year or so with the level of scrutiny he’s been under, but you gotta assume he’s considered this. We’ll see if and how that manifests at all.

The Neutral Zone S05E58: Snakebitten, 27:25
Julia Prior: I hate to be the bad guy, Tyler, but I think we need to have a conversation about Shane Hollander.
Tyler Kudirka: He’s strangely snakebitten isn’t he?
Julia Prior: He is, and yet he’s not been bad by any stretch of the imagination. He’s playing out of his mind. He has multiple points in every game, his line is flying, the PP is clicking, but through all of this… where’s the scoring?
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah. He’s got just two goals in the tournament, and both of them against lower seeded teams. He’s not scoring on NHL goaltenders.
Julia Prior: I almost wonder if he’s got some yips? But he’s playing so excellently otherwise.
Tyler Kudirka: Yeah. His shots on goal are a bit down from what he usually averages, so that’s part of it, but I wonder if that’s partly because they’re just not going in. He’s passing rather than shooting.
Julia Prior: And with his linemates, passing isn’t necessarily the wrong call. He had the one bad giveaway against Switzerland that led to the Haas goal, but otherwise just smart, sound plays. He has thirteen points in the tournament… Do Canada need Shane Hollander to score in order to beat the USA? Or is his presence in the assists column of the point sheet enough?
Tyler Kudirka: I don’t know, Julia. I think… Whether he scores or not, Canada losing wouldn’t be his fault. The Americans are very good, and so are the Canadians. No one should be relying on one guy. But if he can find the back of the net, that could very easily be the reason Canada wins.
Julia Prior: I like that. Sometimes you just need a goal from your big guys.
Tyler Kudirka: In 2014, one goal would’ve made the difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if this year’s gold medal game is similarly close.
Tyler Kudirka ☑️ @neutralzonetyler
Hollander, on what it means to represent Canada: “There are a lot of people here representing Canada. I don’t want to pretend it’s just us, this team is part of a much bigger one. We understand, though, that hockey has a special place in Canada. So it’s an honour, and there’s a lot of pressure that comes with it, but that’s because people care…” 1/2
Tyler Kudirka ☑️ @neutralzonetyler
Hollander: “For me… This year, I’ve been thinking about how this is the country that has given my husband a home, in a way his birthplace can’t be right now. It’s obviously less simple than that, but it’s not something I take for granted. So that’s what I’m playing for.” 2/2

Canada finish the second period down a goal. They’ve had some good looks, but are coming up against solid goaltending and better defence. Going to need a hero in the third.

Canada’s double shifting Hollander, sending him out with his own line and with Brisebois & Doucet. Canada are putting on the pressure and looking dangerous, but let’s hope they don’t tire him out before OT if that’s where we’re headed.
liv ²⁴⁸¹ @hollanovist
oh my god they interviewed roz during the commercial break and asked abt shane and he said “of course he is playing a lot, he is the best guy there. and his stamina on ice is very good.” AND THEN HE WINKED.

Shane Hollander, Olympic Gold, and the Changing Face of Canada’s National Sport. bit.ly/248129
… Hockey is Canada’s national sport. It is a cornerstone of our identity at home and on the international stage. Shane Hollander is gay, he is Japanese-Canadian, and he is a hockey player. And despite those who think he cannot be all of those things at once, he just captained Canada to Olympic gold for the first time in 12 years. This is the face of Canadian Hockey. …
The Neutral Zone S05E59: Golden, 31:56
Tyler Kudirka: Okay, up next, I am so, so delighted to announce that we have an interview on the pod today. You may have heard that some flights got delayed and moved around, and the men’s hockey team very generously offered the Canadian hockey media team seats on their private flight, but we were all holed up together in an airport for a couple of hours first. So, this is a prerecorded clip from our airport adventure, and we are so grateful to the one and only Shane Hollander for giving us his time.
Tyler Kudirka: Well, first of all, Shane, I want to say thank you so much for joining us here on The Neutral Zone and, obviously, congrats on the gold medal.
Shane Hollander: Thank you. I, uh, haven’t really done the podcast thing before, but I know my mom listens to The Neutral Zone, and Ilya appreciated working with you in Boston, Julia, so I’m told I’m in safe hands.
Julia Prior: That’s very kind.
Tyler Kudirka: Seriously, wow, that’s high praise.
Shane Hollander: I think my mom consumes every piece of hockey news she can get her hands on, honestly. She likes to be in the know. But, sorry, you guys have questions.
Tyler Kudirka: No, oh my god, we’re happy to hear whatever you want to say. But we do also have questions, if you’d prefer. … Okay! Um, obviously a lot has changed for you in the past year. Did you anticipate being at these Olympics?
Shane Hollander: I think… That’s a slightly complicated question, because other aspects of my life didn’t go exactly according to plan last year.
Julia Prior: The Fanmail video…
Shane Hollander: Yeah. Um, yeah, but Ilya and I, we were planning to get married and– and come out this summer anyway. The Olympics didn’t factor into that plan significantly. We knew… hockey might change for us. The opportunities within it. So I wasn’t sure if the Olympics would be in the cards for me. We knew they wouldn’t be for Ilya, though, and I wasn’t– I am glad to be here. I want to be clear, I’m so grateful for this opportunity, it’s such an honour, I’m so proud of what we achieved as a team. I wanted to be here, but I wasn’t sure I would be, and I made my peace with that.
Tyler Kudirka: Where were you when you got the call? How did you react?
Shane Hollander: It was Boxing Day, so Ilya and I were at our cottage, where we’d had Christmas with my parents. They were all very excited. My mom cried.
Julia Prior: Aw, that’s sweet.
Shane Hollander: Yeah. Yeah, she cares a lot. And she worries… But, yeah, she was happy. We all were. I think Ilya ordered my jersey that night.
Tyler Kudirka: That’s awesome. Have you seen the videos of him at the Cens watch party?
Shane Hollander: Ha, some of them, yeah.
Tyler Kudirka: The shoey?
Shane Hollander: [snorts] Yes. Yeah, he’s a bit over the top sometimes. I’m glad he had fun. …I’m glad we could win it for him. Or, for everyone. For Canada. But for me, it was for him.
Julia Prior: There’s been some speculation online that you might play for Canada together at the next Olympics.
Shane Hollander: That would be– I mean, immigration is complicated. and hockey changes, and there’s the relationship between the league and the IIHF… and the politics of that, like, the ROC and Hockey Canada, that’s all complicated. It’s not– that would be a dream come true, to play at the Olympics with Ilya, but that’s not something I have any expectation of.
Julia Prior: It sounds to me – and maybe I’m overstepping, so feel free to not answer – but it sounds to me like there’s a lot you’re approaching openly but without expectation these days. Is that fair?
Shane Hollander: …Yeah. Yeah, I think so. I think… Ilya and I have always understood that our relationship is exceptional. We have a lot of hopes. But we’ve been playing hockey for, like, twenty-five years. Eleven years professionally–or, actually, Ilya’s been pro longer than I, he likes to remind me that he was in the KHL for two years first. So thirteen years professionally, for him. But, the point is, we know what hockey is like, and we know that we’re a curveball, so we have hopes, but yeah, maybe not expectation so much. I think… I just keep hoping hockey will surprise us. And it has, so far, for the most part. Not every time, but better than I used to think was possible.
Tyler Kudirka: There was an article in The Globe and Mail earlier today, I’m not sure you’ve had a chance to look at it just yet–?
Shane Hollander: I’ve skimmed it. I try not to read too much hockey news anymore, but my mom thought it was worth the read.
Tyler Kudirka: Sure. In it, they talked about what it means for Canada to be led in our national sport by a gay man of colour. That there’s something very special about the face of Canadian hockey not being just another straight white man. You weren’t quoted in the article, and I wonder if there was anything you wanted to add to this conversation?
Shane Hollander: Yeah. Yeah, um, look, hockey is… what it is, which is a sport I love, and a sport that… says it’s trying to be inclusive, but doesn’t always succeed. Like Canada, I guess. Um. I know I’m seen as a… symbol of diversity in the sport. J.J. and I used to joke that it wasn’t an NHL ad without one of us in it. But maybe that’s more important to me, than being the guy. That maybe I’m a face of that, but maybe not the only one. Hockey’s a team sport, you know? I’m not the only gay guy who won a gold medal for hockey this year, I’m not the only Asian guy, I’m not even the only gay captain. The Canadian women’s team has been captained by a lesbian since 2015.
Shane Hollander: So, I’m very grateful for the players I get to do this with and the players who did it before me. Fred Sasakamoose, Larry Kwong, Willie O’Ree, Paul Kariya, Scott Hunter… Hockey should be for everyone. So… I understand what the article is getting at. It’s an important conversation. But mostly I’m very grateful that I’m not the only hockey player who doesn’t fit the mold. I hope there are many more to come.
Julia Prior: I love that, Shane. It’s such an important conversation. We’re very lucky to have you be a part of it.
Tyler Kudirka: I really had no idea the depths we would get into while talking in the corner of a private airport lounge, but we are so, so glad to hear from you.
Shane Hollander: Yeah. I don’t– There are a lot of people who are better at talking about it than I am. I don’t want to be the only voice in the conversation. I’m really just a hockey player. So, thanks for giving me a heads up about the question and letting me make notes in advance, I guess.
Tyler Kudirka: I think the interview was better for it. Now, we’ll stop taking up your time in just a second here, it’s looking like the flight might finally be boarding, so we’ll finish with one final question: Shane Hollander, two time Olympian, World Juniors Champion, 2011 World Championship silver medalist– What is your favourite memory wearing the maple leaf and representing Canada?
Shane Hollander: Wow. You know–Okay, this Olympics comes close, I should say that, this Olympics has been so inspiring, to play with this great group of guys, to persevere through adversity like that. But, um, I met my husband at the World Juniors in 2008. Not that we– We weren’t even friends after that. But he was such a great hockey player to watch, even as the most annoying seventeen year old you’ve ever met. He was yelling at goalies, he was smoking in a non-smoking area, he played some really beautiful hockey, he beat us… I really should’ve hated him. And then the next year I beat him for the first time, so maybe actually it’s 2009 that’s my favourite.
Julia Prior: Your careers have really been entwined from the beginning, hey?
Shane Hollander: Yeah. Yeah. I, um– I’ve been very lucky to have won as much as I have. But I’ve only won one championship with him on the ice. And we’d like to make it a few more. If people are only ever going to talk about us together, we might as well give ‘em something exciting to talk about.
Tyler Kudirka: Well, we wish you both the best of luck, congratulations once again on the medal, and thank you for joining us here today.
shane’s pr manager @holly24
shane hollander you are actually the most important man in the world oh my god shane hollander do you know i love you
