I want to hear you calling out my name

Summary:

"I want to join the night shift," Robby interrupted shamelessly. His patience was running thin.

At last Adamson broke the silence, "I assume dr. Abbot has nothing to do with this." His expression was calm but Michael could see a glimpse of amusement in his eyes.

***

Robby started his residency in the Pitt, where he met dr. Jack Abbot, the man he couldn't stop thinking about. One day he decided to join the night shift to get closer to Jack.

Notes:

In this au Adamson is alive and works as the chief attending.

English isn't my first language, sorry for any mistakes.

Work Text:

It was Robby's first shift. He came quite early and was waiting for dr. Adamson to show him around.

He tried to grasp the buzz of the ED to kill time. The large hall was filled with almost blinding light, the air smelled of hand sanitizer and people were going back and forth, never stopping.

He managed to get acquainted with the charge nurse of the night shift, Lena. They chatted a little, she asked him some questions about his residency and briefly told what was ahead of him. It seemed like she was going to leave. Lena was nice, Robby thought.

Michael's attention turned back to the noise of the hospital, eyes wanded around the hall. He couldn't quite comprehend that he was about to become part of it, if he wasn't already. Suddenly the trauma bay doors opened, making him come back fo reality. His breath hitched when a handsome man walked out. Curly silver hair, good posture, strong arms. The man took off his bloody gloves and waved lazily while he was talking to another doctor. Robby could tell how well-built he was even through his scrubs.

He watched him for a few minutes, astonished. Apparently, the man felt someone staring at him and turned his head right to where Michael was standing.

His brows were furrowed but when he met with Robby's eyes his expression changed, a little smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. The next moment he turned away to the other doctor. Robby was caught off guard and blushed. He hid his face with his hands, trying to calm down.

Finally Adamson came. "Good morning, dr. Robinavitch," he said, "Came here earlier than me. That's the spirit!"

Michael smiled shyly, "Just Robby, please."

The man nodded, adjusting the stethoscope on his neck, "Alright, dr. Robby, let me show you around quickly before my handoff."

In a few minutes they ended up at the central desk. The little excursion was really quick, Robby hardly memorized anything.

He noticed that Lena was gone and another woman stood at the central.

"Morning, boss," she said while she was organizing the desk.

Adamson nodded in response. "Robby, this is Dana, our charge nurse. Please, do everything she tells you."

Robby blinked surprised, that made Dana chuckle. "Come on, you're scaring the kid. The day hasn't even started."

It was Adamson's turn to chuckle, a little ashamed.

Robby was already confused though he hadn't even started working yet. He could feel a headache creeping in from overwhelming.

"Seems like y'all had a good rest," an unfamiliar voice interrupted.

That made everyone to turn around. It was that doctor. Robby could feel his face blushing again and fought the urge to cover it with his hands.

Adamson greeted him, then added, "Dr. Abbot, this is our new student doctor Robby," then he turned to Michael, "Robby, this is dr. Jack Abbot, the night shift attending."

Robby extended his hand in greeting and Abbot squeezed it with his big palm. Robby could see freckles not only covering the man's face and neck, but also stretching from his hand up to the sleeve of his scrubs. He couldn't take his eyes off them.

"Good luck with your first shift," said Jack. He was standing tall, though tiredness was creeping at the corners of his eyes. "Well, let me borrow dr. Adamson, I wanted to consult about one patient," he added and the two men went away.

Yeah, Robby surely needed some luck.

***

Robby didn't talk much to Jack at first. Usually they met during handoffs, only glancing at each other quietly. But things changed when Jack had to join the day shift because of an emergency. The nearest ED closed for an unknown reason so even more injured people were coming to the Pitt.

An endless stream of patients became much worse. Robby's tired brain was hardly functioning and he prayed that some stale coffee from the lounge could help him.

The last straw was him ending up in the trauma bay side by side with Abbot. Michael still wasn't sure how that had happened. He was on his way to check out some patients when a gurney rolled in. A white man in his 30-ish was lying on it. Jack, who was passing by, called for dr. Adamson and grabbed Robby, saying, "Come on, you're gonna help as well," and made their way to the man. Robby wished to dissappear from that damn ED.

The man's breath was shallow and there was a nasty bruise on his chest. Seemed like he had a broken rib.

They got straight to work, examining the patient. Robby's head started working again from the adrenaline. He perfectly answered Abbot's questions, concerning the patient's condition, and followed his instructions. Adamson was observing, ready to interrupt if the man's condition worsened. He looked at Jack and Robby thoughtfully, it was interesting how the two of them clicked together so easily.

Once they were done, they left the room and headed to the central to take a breath. Jack leaned his elbows on the desk, Robby did the same. He could feel exhaustion creeping in again and his limbs went limp a little.

"Good job," said Jack, looking right into Robby's eyes.

Michael nodded shyly, a little smile tugging on his face. "It was great!" he said excitedly, quickly correcting himself, "I mean... not the man's condition but working together." He looked away and hoped that it didn't sound as awkward as he felt.

Jack smirked pleased, "You can always join the night shift, you know."

"What?" Robby's eyes widened in surpise.

Jack glanced at him a little disappointed, then nodded to himself. "Think about it, I'd like to have you around," he winked and went away, leaving Robby dumbfounded.

Michael's face reddened as always and the tiredness was washed away by sudden excitement.

"Seriously?" Dana's voice made Robby shudder. He hadn't even noticed her. He turned to her even more embarrassed.

Robby only shrugged in response.

Dana gave him an incredulous look over her glasses, "If you don't want the whole ED to talk about you two, please, try to be more subtle."

Michael hid his face with his hands and growled. "Dana!" he begged.

"Go and check on your patients already, we're almost done," she said like nothing had happened.

The sun filled Robby's kitchen with light, warm on his skin. The weather was getting unbearably hot, the temperature getting higher with each day. Robby didn't want to overheat and get in the Pitt even on his day off but as a patient this time. That's why he had decided to stay at home and was just lazing around.

He was sitting at the counter, a cup of iced coffee beside him. Robby turned on some movie on his laptop with hope that it would distract him. But all the dialogues were just a mere noise as his mind drifted away.

I'd like to have you around was repeating in his head all day long. Michael felt embarrassed and foolish for thinking of those hazel eyes, strong arms and damn freckles. He wished he could see how much of Jack's body they covered. And he felt even worse because Abbot indulged his fantasies with that stupid wink.

Robby wondered if Jack wanted something more. If there was the desire hidden behind the offer to work together. If Jack thought of him as often as Michael did, wishing he had the courage to ask him out.

If there was a possibility-

Robby closed the laptop, taking a deep breath. The movie wasn't distracting at all, he needed something better to stop overthinking.

***

Robby woke up determined to ask Adamson to change his shift. He rehearsed the way he would approach the attending, nonchalant and confident. His speech was supposed to be short, nothing extra. Simple I want to join the night shift to test myself and master my skills. It couldn't be so difficult, Robby thought.

Unfortunately, his confidence disappeared the moment he stepped in the ED. He walked down the hall and took off his headphones. The noise of beeping machines, angry patients and hurried steps hit him immediately. As he immersed in that buzz, his actual intention felt so stupid all of a sudden. He tried to bury that thought. Why would he worry so much if Adamson didn't even know about his secret crush. Because he definitely didn't, right?

And Adamson wasn't anywhere. Robby had to find him as soon as possible until he lost the determination.

He rushed through the hospital, noticing displeased glances from his colleagues (probably because he was fooling around instead of working).

Finally he saw Adamson's figure on the stairwell and headed right to him. He almost ran when the attending was going to go another way.

"Dr. Adamson!" Robby shouted, making the man shudder and stop.

"What's the matter?" The man turned around, seemingly worried.

Michael ran up to him and breathed heavily, trying to pull himself together.

"I want to ask you something."

"Dr. Robby, I'm a bit busy-"

"I want to join the night shift," Robby interrupted shamelessly. His patience was running thin.

Adamson just looked at him for a while, glanced away thoughtfully, then looked at him again with suspicion. "Alright," he drawled, "May I ask why?"

"Wanna try something new," all Robby could say, the prepared speech long forgotten.

Adamson kept watching him like prompting to tell the real reason. Robby's mouth was shut, he wasn't going to give up.

At last Adamson broke the silence, "I assume dr. Abbot has nothing to do with this." His expression was calm but Michael could see a glimpse of amusement in his eyes. Why would he say this Robby begged in his head.

Robby's eyes widened in shock. He opened his mouth but before he could excuse himself, he said, "Weren't you busy, dr. Adamson? I think I've taken up enough of your time."

The attending shook his head but a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "Alright, I will change your schedule," he rubbed his face and added, "Even if I'm not satisfied with your answer."

Michael's face blushed a little. He thanked the man genuinely and ran away. Apparently, Adamson knew everything, shit- Robby's mind drifted but he couldn't dwell on it because he noticed Dana glaring at him with annoyance. An unspoken question above her head are you gonna work today? Before she opened her mouth to say everything she thought, Michael glanced at the list of patients, grabbed a tablet and hid in one of the examining rooms.

Changing sleep schedule was hard and coming to work when the sun was already high up in the sky felt strange. Robby very soon realized that, maybe, turning his usual work schedule upside down for a man wasn't the best idea.

He hardly slept that night. He used to take naps during the day in med school but it wasn't like he could sleep all day long. On top of that, Robby wasn't actually prepared properly. His curtains, even closed, let in light, so the room was too bright for sleeping. And oh god was it always so loud outside while the sun was up? Michael was in desperate need of blackout curtains and earplugs.

Anyway, he had made his mind and was already on his way to the Pitt. The scorching sun was finally giving in and light breeze blew in his face. At least he wouldn't die from the heat.

The ED as always met him with usual noise and fuss. He made his way to the lockers, where he met dr. Ellis tossing her own bag into one of them. She turned her head when she heard someone approaching. When Ellis realized who it was, her eyebrows lifted and a smirk appeared on her face. "Look who it is," she turned fully to Robby, still smiling.

Robby gave her an uncertain look. He was quite surprised by her reaction. "Glad to see you too?"

Ellis tipped her head and crossed her arms, watching him for a second. Michael could see amusement in her eyes, she didn't even try to hide it. "Has Abbot seen you yet?"

"Um no," Robby shifted on his feet, getting uneasy.

Ellis stood there in silence for a moment like she was weighing her words. "Good. I wanna see the look on his face when he sees you."

Robby's eyes widened, then he looked at her incredulously. His limbs tingled unpleasantly from surprise. He opened his mouth, then closed, making incomprehensible gestures with his hands. "What do you mean 'the look on his face'?"

Ellis closed her eyes for a second, pinching the bridge of her nose. "You'll get it when you see it," she nodded her head to the hall, prompting him to follow her.

There they stood, looking for Abbot. It was Ellis who noticed him first. The man had just come. He greeted nurses at the central on his way to the lockers, a backpack swayed on his shoulder.

Jack hadn't noticed them yet so Robby waited nervously, his hands fidgeted with the hem of his scrubs. He glanced at Ellis, who held her breath in anticipation.

He turned back to Abbot and that was the moment when their eyes met. Jack's brows raised and a smile appeared on his face. Michael could see sparks in his eyes, the man was literally glowing with joy. He couldn't help but smile back. But then he turned to Ellis in utter shock. She was grinning mischievously like she had just won a bet. Well, maybe she really did. Robby knew that she was in good terms with dr. Abbot.

"So you've finally joined us," Jack stopped in front of them, a pleased expression on his face. Though it got grum when he turned to Ellis, who was still grinning like the cat that got the cream. Abbot just rolled his eyes, "Don't even get started."

"I will," she paused full of herself, "But a bit later. I think you'd like to have some privacy for now."

"Looking forward to it," he winked at Robby, who was already blushing. "Now shoo, work awaits," he glanced between them, "And I mean both of you."

Ellis made a wry face and left, immersing into the fuss of the ED. Robby was going to do the same, he made a first step and stopped. He looked at his bag, that he clearly forgot to put in his locker and was still oh his shoulder.

Jack eyed him questioningly, "I thought you and dr. Ellis had already been to the lockers."

"Yeah, dr. Ellis distracted me so I forgot to put it away."

Robby had to join Abbot and go back. He hoped that Lena hadn't noticed that he hadn't started working yet. He didn't want her to think that he was lazing around or he would get some extra work.

"I didn't hope to get privacy so soon," Jack's words got him back to reality. The man leaned a little closer. Michael noticed how his smile made the lines around his eyes crinkle. Robby quickly turned his head, hiding his red face. I won't survive this shift.

Now their quiet glances turned into noticeable looks. Whenever Robby saw the man, he couldn't take his eyes off. Seeing Abbot not so tired as he usually was at the end of his shifts but quite full of energy was strangely nice. Michael tried to keep things cool, be nonchalant. He had to stay calm at least in front of his patients. But it was getting harder with each hour. He could also feel Jack's hungry look on his skin, it sent sparkles down his spine every time, making him shiver.

On top of that, Jack turned out to be quite tactile. He'd been testing the waters at first, patting Michael lightly on his shoulders. Robby loved the feeling of the man's strong arms on his body and Abbot very soon understood it. So he let his arm slid to the base of Robby's neck, touching his bare skin above the scrubs and squeezing it gently. Michael fought the urge to close his eyes and leave a shaky breath but he couldn't help leaning against it. Abbot just hummed pleased.

The desire only grew stronger by morning. It tickled in his chest, making his heart beat faster. It made Robby pick as many patients as he could to distract his mind from the attending. Jack probably noticed. He stopped Michael in the hall, looking down at him like studying, and said proudly, "Doing a great job, keep going." And he patted Robby again, keeping his fingers on his shoulder for longer than needed. Michael felt dizzy and blissful and so good but it wasn't enough. He craved for so much more.

And Robby noticed when Abbot disappeared all of a sudden.

The shift was almost over and Robby thought that maybe they could talk about this. Or maybe they could do it without words, who knows. Anyway, Jack was out of sight so he went straight to Lena. He figured that she always knew where who was. Really fascinating.

"Hey, Lena, do you know where dr. Abbot is?" He tilted his head a little and hid his hands in his pockets.

She looked at him thoughtfully, "He must be on the roof by now."

"Roof?" Robby was surprised to hear that. He didn't even know that they could go there. And why would he go there?

"Mhm, you can climb up there by stairs," she turned her gaze to some notes on her table, "Why?"

"Just gotta ask him something," Robby looked away, trying not to think of what exactly he wanted to ask. He didn't want to get embarrassed in front of her.

He was gonna leave, already turned away when Lena stopped him. "By the way, before you go," she paused, fixing her glasses, " I just wanted to say that you did a good job on your first night shift."

"Thank you," Robby smiled shyly.

He made it to the roof and saw Abbot standing there in front of the railings. The sun was already up and it made him look even more handsome. His curls shone and his skin looked warmer. Robby realized that he had never seen Jack outside of the hospital, under natural light.

The man turned his head when he heard the door creaking. He looked a little surprised to see Michael. Robby couldn't understand if he was glad to see him or not.

"Um... what are you doing here?" Robby asked straight while he was approaching the railings.

Jack stayed silent for a moment. "Getting some air," he shrugged and turned back to the city.

Robby looked at him puzzled. Couldn't he just go to the ambulance bay?

Robby came closer. He watched the sky, then the buildings, choosing the right words. The silence stretched.

"It's usually only me here," Abbot said thoughtfully, keeping his eyes on the city, "I'm not quite used to a company."

His words made Robby turn to him. "You want me to leave?" He was ready to take a step back. He felt embarrassed and it stung through his body unpleasantly.

"No," Jack said hastily, grabbing Robby's forearm, "I didn't say that." He eased his grip but didn't take his hand away. It seemed like Jack did it unconsciously.

Michael looked at the hand, clutching at the fabric of his scrubs. His heartbeat raised. They were all alone on the roof, so close to each other. He swallowed hard.

Jack squeezed his forearm gently, "Do you like it?" He tilted his head, his gaze steady on Robby's face. Jack's brows were furrowed, something uncertain on his face.

Robby's breath hitched. "Yes, dr. Abbot," he nodded.

"You can call me Jack while we're alone."

"I can't do it here," he looked away but the corners of his mouth turned up a little.

"Then where can you?" Jack smiled smugly. His hand was still on Robby's forearm and he ran it to his shoulder.

"Somewhere far from here."

"Well, my apartment isn't really far," Jack pulled him closer, "I don't know if it will suit you."

"Oh yeah?" Michael took a step forward, leaving only a few inches between them.

Jack hummed in response. His hand got up to Robby's face, his thumb stroked his cheekbone.

"I think it will do," their lips brushed when Robby said that.

Jack leaned closer, tilting his head just right, and kissed him. Michael licked his soft lips and it sent sparks through his body. Such intimacy made him dizzy and he loved the feeling. Robby put his hands around Abbot's neck, keeping him close.

Jack kept his own hand on Michael's face and put the other one on his waist. He deepened the kiss, moaning quietly. That drove Robby insane. He pressed their bodies together and buried his hand in Jack's hair.

Abbot broke the kiss, breathing heavily. "So, you can't call me by my name here but it's totally fine to make out so eagerly," his words made Robby blush harder, even the tips of his ears were red. Jack just loved it, he smiled and kissed him again.

"So um your apartment then?" Roby moved just enough to capture Jack's face. Lips parted and swollen, pupils dilated, breathing shallow. So perfect.

"Mhm wanna hear you calling out my name," Abbot winked. Michael groaned, he couldn't bear the heat on his face, so he hid it in the crook of Jack's neck.

The walk home was rather tensed and impatient. Jack said his flat was near but it felt like miles away. Robby didn't know what to say, didn't know what to do. He was ready to pull his hair out. Apparently, Jack noticed so he took Robby's hand, grounding him a little.

When they entered the flat, Jack closed the door and then pressed Michael into it, kissing him hungrily. He ran his fingers over his body, ending on Robby's waist and pulling his long sleeved shirt and scrubs up. The touch made Robby shiver. His own hands were on Jack's back, grabbing the fabric of his scrubs.

Abbot kissed the line of his jaw, hands still studying the body. He pulled off Robby's cloth and threw it somewhere on the floor. Jack watched him for a moment, breathing hard. "So beautiful," he whispered against Michael's neck, kissing it. His fingers ran from his shoulders to his waist again, pulling him closer.

Robby moaned and tugged at Abbot's hair, so that he could see the man's face. He begged, "Jack, please." The words were muffled as his lips were swollen and mind was drifting. It was enough for Jack to break loose, he lifted Robby up and carried him to the bedroom.

Michael was astonished, his eyes widened and he made a surprised sound, quickly pressing his hand to his mouth. He prayed to see Jack's bare body, how well-built he was.

Jack gently put Robby on his bed and took off his own scrubs and t-shirt. He stood in front of Michael, looking down at him and that felt so good. Robby's eyes wandered around his torso, admiring muscles and freckles, that covered his whole body.

And that was the moment when Abbot faltered. He looked at Robby a bit uncertain. He furrowed and crossed his hands.

"Is something wrong?" Robby's voice betrayed him, showing his worrying.

"No... no," Jack snapped back to reality. He shifted on his feet, "Just... don't freak out." He unbuckled the belt, his pants dropped to the floor, revealing a prosthetic.

Robby looked at it dumbfounded. His overwhelmed brain couldn't function properly so it took quite long to process. When he realized that the silence stretched, he jumped off the bed and looked Jack in the eyes. He could see some kind of doubt in them. Michael put his hands on Abbot's shoulders. "It's fine, I'm not gonna bail," this time his voice was steady. He pressed a kiss on his mouth and caressed his skin soothingly in approval.

Abbot exhaled seemingly relieved and kissed him back. He pulled off Robby's pants and shoved him on the bed. He sat beside him to take off the prosthetic. Michael enveloped Jack's back with his hand and watched him carefully. He studied the lines on the man's face, his focused eyes and messy curls.

When Jack was done, he pushed Robby further on the bed and took out a condom and lube from the drawer. Robby moaned just from sight of it. He couldn't comprehend that it was real, that it was happening. The desire he had all this time wasn't one-sided. His face was red and he covered it with a pillow to let its cool fabric soothe his burning skin a little.

"Don't hide your pretty face," Abbot turned to him and took the pillow away. He ran his palm over Michael's chest. Robby grabbed it and pressed to his own mouth, leaving wet kisses. Jack licked his lips, expression full of want.

Robby gasped when Jack slipped into his boxers and palmed his hard cock. He then tugged at the elastic band and revealed it, stroking it with his large hand. It was dry and yet Robby's hips twitched to get more friction.

"Do you like it?" Abbot stroke him once. Robby nodded, groaning.

"Do you want to get more?" Jack smiled pleased, stroking him again.

"Yes, please," Robby begged, he was already a mess.

Jack stopped, keeping his hand at the base of Michael's cock like prompting him. Robby closed his eyes, thinking hard. His mushed brains finally remembered about Jack's last words on the roof.

"Yes, Jack, please."

"Good boy," he kissed the head of Robby's dick, sending sparks through his body, and pulled the boxers off. He then quickly got rid of his own ones and settled between Michael's legs. Jack looked at him lovingly. He admired the flushed skin and eyes that watched him so hungrily.

Jack pushed Robby's legs apart. "Have you ever been a bottom?" He asked while getting some lube on his fingers.

Robby nodded impatiently. He gasped when the man pushed a finger inside of him. "Jack," Robby said with trembling voice and extended his hand to reach for him. Jack bended over and pressed their lips together. Robby moaned in his mouth while Jack was stretching him.

Pleasure rushed through his veins. Michael called out Jack's name again when he touched his prostate. He dug his nails into Jack's back and squirmed.

Jack pulled his fingers out and straightened. He opened the condom with his teeth as if making it a show. Robby put his head back, his whole body shuddered. Why is he like this?!

"Look at me," Jack pleaded, voice a little hoarse. He lifted Robby's legs on his shoulders and kissed his right calf. Michael looked him in the eyes. There was a pleased smile on Jack's face. Jack ran his fingers soothingly along his legs before grabbing them and pushing inside. Robby was left breathless.

Thrusts were long and slow to let Robby adjust. Eyes half-lidded and lips parted, he clutched the sheets. Every Jack's move sent sparks down his spine.

"Come here," Robby's words were muffled, he reached out for Jack again. He bended Robby in half to kiss him. Michael put his hands on Jack's face and pressed their foreheads together. "You feel so good, Robby," thrusts became faster.

"I wish we did this earlier," he whispered before biting Robby's earlobe. "Next time I'm gonna suck your dick right on the threshold of this flat."

Robby swallowed hard just thinking about it. His cock was already aching and he could come untouched if Jack kept talking.

Jack tried to say something else but he faltered as he groaned. He kissed Robby's jawline and touched his cock, stroking it. Robby's breath hitched and his hips twitched forward. He cried Jack's name again.

"You're doing so well," he kept moving, leaving Robby an absolute mess.

Robby came in Jack's palm with a loud moan. Jack made a few more thrusts and shuddered when he came, moaning too.

They stayed like this for a few seconds, breathing heavily. Robby's tired brain was washed over with pleasure, he could neither think nor speak.

In the end Jack pulled out and sat at the corner of the bed, picking up his crutches. Robby looked at them a little surprised. He completely failed to notice the crutches when they had just entered the bedroom.

Jack disappeared in the bathroom, then came back and cleaned Robby with wet washcloth. Cold fabric against his flushed skin made him shiver. Jack dropped it on the floor when he was done and closed the blackout curtains, letting darkness fill the room.

He went back to bed and covered them with a blanket. Robby lay on Jack's broad chest and hugged him. He could hear that his heartbeat was still a bit raised.

Tiredness crept in but a thought appeared in his head. It made him uncertain and didn't let relax fully.

Jack ran his hand along Robby's side and pressed a kiss on his head when he felt Robby tensing. "Are you okay?" his voice was a little hoarse.

"Yeah, it's just," Robby weighed his words. Light fingers followed the freckles on Jack's chest. "What are we now?"

Jack patted his head, staying silent for a moment. "What do you want us to be?"

"I want to us to be together," he mumbled in Jack's chest. Somehow it felt embarrassing even though they had just fucked.

"Well, then let us."

"So easy?" Robby lifted his head, resting his chin so he could see Jack's face.

Jack raised his eyebrow, "Do you want things to be complicated?"

"No," his face blushed again.

"Good," Jack pressed a quick kiss to his lips. "Now sleep, we still gotta work tomorrow."

They settled comfortably. Robby's mind drifted and blissful sleep took over him.
