Boruto: Echoes of the Beginning

Summary:

Every story begins with a birth.

This one begins with an assassination.

After watching the Shinobi World fall to the revived Infinite Tsukuyomi, Boruto Uzumaki is sent back to the day he entered the world. Armed with memories of an inevitable future, he believes there is only one way to save humanity.

He must kill the newborn Boruto Uzumaki.

But when the greatest enemy standing in his way is the love of his own parents, Boruto is forced to confront a devastating truth.

What if he was never the reason the world ended... but its last hope?

Notes:

Hey, guys!

I've had this absurd idea living rent-free in my head for a while now, and I finally gave in and started writing it.

Maybe it's because the Boruto manga has been serving nothing but pain lately, but I couldn't stop thinking, "What if Boruto suffered even more?" 💀

So... here we are.

This story is basically my love letter to angst. If you've been keeping up with the manga, you know Boruto's life has been one heartbreak after another. And somehow, my brain looked at all that suffering and said, "Not enough."

Honestly, this is still just an idea that I wanted to get out of my head. I have no clue how it'll turn out, or whether it'll end up being a short fanfic or grow into a long one. I'm just writing whatever my brain decides to throw at me.

This is an alternate universe, so expect things to be different from canon. Some events may change, some characters may make different choices, and Boruto's journey will take a completely different path.

So, let's just enjoy the ride together and see where this story takes us.

I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy making Boruto suffer. ❤️

Chapter 1: The Last Shinobi

Chapter Text

The world did not end with a bang. It ended with silence.

Not the comforting silence that followed peace, nor the silence of a village sleeping beneath a sky full of stars. This was the silence of extinction.

The wind no longer carried laughter through the streets of Konohagakure. It no longer rustled the leaves of the ancient trees that had stood watch over generations of shinobi. No footsteps echoed along the stone paths. No merchants called out from their stalls. No children raced across rooftops pretending to become Hokage.

Even the birds had forgotten how to sing.

Beneath a crimson moon, the world stood frozen beneath an endless sky woven by the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Towering white trees stretched across the horizon like the bones of forgotten gods, their roots piercing mountains, swallowing rivers, and splitting the earth itself. Their branches reached endlessly toward the heavens, wrapped in countless cocoons that swayed gently despite the absence of wind.

Inside every cocoon...

A life.

A dream.

A world that would never awaken.

The Shinobi Era had not been defeated.

It had simply... stopped.

A lone figure walked through the ruins. His footsteps were the only sound left in a dead world.

His cloak, once black, had long since faded beneath ash, blood, and countless battles. Torn at the edges and riddled with holes, it fluttered weakly behind him as though even the fabric had grown tired of surviving.

A sword rested at his waist. Its once-pristine blade bore countless chips, each one carved by battles no history would remember.

The man carrying it looked scarcely older than twenty. Yet his eyes belonged to someone who had lived a lifetime too many.

One brilliant blue. The other scarred shut.

Boruto Uzumaki.

The last shinobi.

He no longer remembered how many years had passed since the sky had fallen.

Years...

Perhaps decades...

Time had ceased to matter after the last voice disappeared.

He walked because stopping meant thinking. Thinking meant remembering. Remembering meant breaking.

The remains of Konoha unfolded before him like fragments of a forgotten dream. The Hokage Monument had collapsed into the mountainside, faces weathered beyond recognition. Naruto's stone visage lay shattered among broken cliffs, half buried beneath pale roots that had spread like veins across the earth.

Boruto stopped.

His gaze lingered on the broken face of the Seventh Hokage.

"...Sorry, Dad." His voice cracked from disuse.

No answer came... There never would again.

He moved up the fractured cliffs. Up the broken remains of the monument, until he stood atop what remained of Naruto Uzumaki's stone face.

The wind did not blow. The world did not breathe. But from here...

He could see everything. The village that once lived. The ruins that remained. The Divine Tree in the distance, towering like a god that had claimed the world.

Boruto stood at the edge of his father's head, looking out over the graveyard of everything he had failed to protect.

His hand tightened around a turtle-shaped artifact rested in his palm.

Karasuki.

Its surface was etched with unfamiliar markings, faintly glowing with the chakra he had spent years feeding into it.

Years.

Years of wandering.

Years of pouring every last fragment of his strength into this single, desperate hope.

He stared at it in silence.

"...It's finally ready." The words felt foreign like they belonged to someone else.

His gaze drifted back toward the horizon.

Toward the Divine Tree. Toward the countless lives trapped within it.

And then, memories surfaced.

A girl with red glasses and fierce eyes.

"You're the one that's gonna become a Hokage, right?"

'Sarada.'

His chest tightened.

"Then, I'll be your right-hand man and work hard to protect you."

He had said it so easily back then. So confidently.

Another memory followed. A man with a single eye, standing in silence beneath the weight of the world.

Sasuke Uchiha.

"Protect her."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

"No matter what it takes."

Boruto's grip on Karasuki trembled.

"...I promised." His voice broke. "I promised both of you..."

His gaze dropped to the artifact in his hand. "...and I still failed."

The windless world offered no comfort.

No forgiveness.

Only truth.

Sarada was gone.

Sasuke was gone.

Everyone was gone.

And he... The one who swore to protect them... Was the only one left.

A hollow laugh escaped him.

"...Some right hand I turned out to be."

Silence swallowed the sound.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then—

A faint glow pulsed from Karasuki.

Soft.

Steady.

Waiting.

Boruto closed his eyes.

He understood what this meant.

There would be no second chance after this.

No returning.

No fixing things later.

If he used it... Everything would change. Or nothing would. And he would disappear along with it.

A familiar voice echoed faintly in his mind.

Cold.

Observing.

"You intend to erase yourself."

Boruto didn't answer.

Because there was nothing left to argue.

He opened his eyes.

Looked out over the world one last time.

At the broken monument beneath his feet.

At the silent village below.

At the Divine Tree that held everyone he loved.

His fingers tightened around Karasuki.

"If..." His voice was steady now.

"If the world has to choose between me..." He took a slow breath. "...and everyone else..."

A tear slid down his cheek.

"...then I was never meant to be born."

Karasuki flared to life.

Light erupted from its shell, spreading outward in spiraling patterns of chakra that twisted space itself.

The world began to distort.

The sky fractured.

The crimson moon shattered into fragments of light.

Boruto stood unmoving.

Unflinching.

Accepting.

The last shinobi.

Making his final choice.

The light consumed everything.

The ruins.

The tree.

The silence.

The world.

Darkness followed.

Then—

A newborn's cry pierced the void.

Sharp.

Fragile.

Alive.

Boruto's eyes flew open.
