He’d failed.
That was all that echoed through Grian’s mind, as he’d taken a moment to rest on the first night. The first night of a new round of a game he’d sworn never to play again. Prayed that the Watchers had taken his sacrifice as a loss, and moved on to find new targets. Except they hadn’t. They would wait for the last person standing, then take them to be one of their own.
So he’d just have to win again.
Maybe he hadn’t failed just yet.

Summary
Grian refused to scream, as the metal seared deeper into his flesh. Instead, he bit his tongue and tried not to gag on the smell of burning flesh. He wouldn’t give them that satisfaction, he kept telling himself, even though it grew harder and harder every time they brought out a new tool, to try and break him. It wouldn’t be much longer until they succeeded, but every second he held out, was a second longer in which someone might come for him.
Nobody was coming.

Summary
Scott let out a muffled cry, breathing shakily through the shock. The collapsing cave had caught him off-guard, but for a moment, he thought the shock was the worst of his injuries. A bruise to his ego, but on the whole, a lucky escape.
It turned out rather fast, that he wasn’t so lucky after all.

This was fine, Scott convinced himself, sharply inhaling to cover up a wince. Sure, it felt like he was being stabbed every time he took a breath, and he was probably giving himself rib damage along the way – but nobody could see. And that was the most important thing.

Summary
The heart monitor let out one, long beep, and Scar didn’t cry. Doctors and nurses rushed around, and Grian was declared dead at 3:51am, and Scar didn’t cry.
Friends sat in the waiting room, and squeezed his hand, and gave him hugs, and said I’m sorry for your loss. He was kicked out into the main foyer as the body was taken down to the morgue, and waited in silence until he was told by the doctors he could go. A nurse came by, and gently pressed a leaflet on ‘grief and bereavement’ into his hands, and Scar didn’t cry.

Summary
Grian had known it was coming. Neither him nor Taurtis could drive a bus - he was too young to drive a car, and he couldn’t even ride a bike. So when Taurtis’ grip had slipped from the steering wheel slightly, and Sam had embedded a knife just below Taurtis’ ribcage, it was left to Grian to try and stop the bus from crashing – a task at which he’d failed at dismally.
