Summary
Odysseus stops and lets them both catch their breath. After a moment they continue to hobble forward – deeper into the dark undergrowth – and he can’t take the silence anymore:
“At least you are not as ridiculously tall as Eurylochus. I have no idea what I would do with him,” he whispers hoping Polites would take the bait.

This was supposed to be purely self-indulgent "Odysseus takes care of injured Polites" but then the characters took over and proceeded to have an existential crisis. Good thing they can ground each other.Dedicated to the wicked woman who sent me "a cool animatic to check out". You know what you did

Summary
“Oh. I see.” The corner of his mouth twitches up in a failed attempt to smile. “I’m fine. But thank you.”
“Your definition of ‘fine’ would interest some scholars.” Odysseus catches his hand again, this time trapping it between his two. To the cold skin, they feel like fire. “Enlighten me: why would one avoid the comfort of his own bed and blankets in favor of slowly freezing outside?”

Summary
“What gives you the right-?” the words echo in his mind. Odysseus wishes he had stopped and given the cyclops something to remember them by. Perhaps taking Polyphemus' arm – even though this probably won’t amount to the same blinding pain he feels.
He glances back at Polites and realizes it wouldn't have mattered. A single warrior can kill dozens in a battle, yet even gods rarely bring a single soul back to life. Odysseus is just a soldier, so he begs Polites to hold on.
