Summary
Capitano is suddenly reminded of a frigid Snezhnayan spring just like this from years ago. He had been passing through a forest at night, fresh snow and dry pine leaves crunching under his boots, when he heard a loud, animal shriek. He held out his lamp towards the dark, and there they were; a few pairs of eyes in the distance, ember-bright and wild, their orange coats swirls of flame as they ran and leapt amongst trees that stood tall like gallows. When they seek a mate, they don’t sing like songbirds, they scream. They wail their longing, cry out their hunger, howl their ache, as they wander the night, calling for their kind.

Summary
The cute sight of Ajax before him makes Capitano lift his hand with the irresistible urge to squish his cheeks, but a sudden thought stops him. What if his claws appear and hurt him?
He drops his hand, defeated.
Ajax’s smile disappears as a sad, thoughtful look crosses his features.
“You don’t have to hold yourself back, you know,” he says ruefully.
Capitano looks down, self-conscious. “I'm sorry.”
Ajax appears to be lost in thought for a moment, then smiles and takes Capitano's hand. “Come. I have an idea.”

The soldier looks up from her work. “I saw them walk behind the medic tent, the one farthest back.”

Dolokhov nods at the soldier and makes his way toward the tent. As he approaches, he can make out faint noises of a conversation.
As he passes by the troika farthest back, he sees them.

Summary
Ajax holds his hand as he sits up again, the intense look in his eyes a clear indicator that he intends to take things a step further. “I want to take care of you tonight, would you let me?”
Capitano pauses. When they make love, he feels more comfortable when giving. Being on the receiving end of pleasure, however, is something he still hasn’t gotten completely used to. The time they have been together hasn’t erased decades of loneliness, of believing himself to be unlovable. Tartaglia smiles at him, kisses his mouth full of sharp teeth, holds his coal black hands that end in claws; but every time a small, fragile voice inside Capitano whispers Why? Why do you love me? Do you really mean it?
He decides that his lover deserves to get what he wants, at least for tonight.

Summary
They kiss like fighting a battle, taking their frustrations out on each other in the form of lips moving as if trying to consume, hands grabbing and pulling any purchase they can find, teeth grazing sensitive skin. Capitano’s hand moves to the back of Ajax’s head and grabs a fistful of ginger locks, making him moan against his mouth. Ajax’s wandering hands push Capitano’s heavy winter overcoat off his shoulders and onto the floor.
When they separate, the heat simmering in Capitano’s guts is less from anger and more from the magnetic, irresistible pull between them. He fixes the many eyes scattered on his face to Ajax’s, faces inches apart, and murmurs, “Bold words from someone easily quietened by a mere kiss.”
Ajax chuckles, fearless and entertained. “You want me quiet?” he says, just as hushed, hand sliding to hold Capitano’s cheek. “Make me.”

An argument between Capitano and Ajax takes a heated turn.
