It starts slow, the creeping awareness he develops of him. Oscar had always associated Carlos with red— the same red as the car that had haunted him through his rookie year, all those crashes with the number 55 etched into his memory. The anger had been just as bright, just as impossible to ignore. So it feels like a shock to his system every time he sees a flash of blue followed by Carlos. Like a funny joke, a bruise that aches. It takes him a second to get used to it, and still Oscar finds himself staring more than he should.

He breathes out. It rustles Nancy’s blouse. He pulls back, from both of them. “Can- can we talk about everything tomorrow? We should all get some rest.” He rubs at his neck, guilt, shame, and everything crashing down on him.
Nancy smiles sadly at him. “Of course. We’re on your time, Stevie.” And Steve blushes at the nickname, looking over at Jonathan.
“O-okay, well, I’ll see you guys tomorrow then.” He tries not to sound too awkward as he stands up and slowly walks towards the door. Jonathan makes a noise, and it takes everything in Steve not to turn around.
“You could stay with us. I just- I think not sleeping alone helps, sometimes.” He says, awkward as hell. But he keeps his eyes pinned to Steve’s back.
Steve slowly turns towards both of them, looking at them wearily. Nancy is smiling at Jonathan. And. Well. Steve feels something in his chest fracture even more.
“I couldn’t.”
Steve is bad at vulnerability. So are Nancy and Jonathan. But their combined determination is enough.

“You are sick,” Ilya said slowly, enunciating every word. He sprayed another stream of water into his mouth, and Shane couldn’t help but stare at the way his throat moved. He felt hypnotized, trapped in Ilya’s stare, and the other man put the bottle down. “Have you scene before, Shane Hollander?”
Shane’s expression crumpled before he could wrestle it back under control. He cleared his throat, his stomach cramping uncomfortably. “Have I what? Have--scened with someone? What do you mean?”
“You are sub,” Ilya spoke with the water bottle waving, his voice casual. He ignored Shane’s defensive posture, gesturing to the trash can. “Sub get sick when not scene. When no Dom to scene with,” Ilya trailed off, looking Shane up and down, lingering on his collarless throat before continuing. “Is…unhealthy.”
In a world where subs, Doms, and Switches are biologically determined, subs are not accepted within a Dom-oriented sport like hockey. Sub Shane Hollander keeps his designation hidden, but when confronted with Dom Ilya Rozanov, he can't fight his designation for long.

“Look at me,” Ilya’s voice was quiet, but Shane obeyed immediately, his eyes fuzzy at the corners, “How are you feeling?”
Shane intended to lie. There was no reason to complicate things with hard truths that not even he understood. Instead, his lip wobbled, and he found that he couldn’t say anything at all.
“Ah,” Ilya made a noise that sounded nearly as devastated as Shane felt, and put a hand on the back of his neck, pulling him forward. Shane went easily, his forehead pressing into Ilya’s shoulder, and breathing deeply through his nose, trying not to cry.
Or, Shane drops after leaving Ilya's house.
