Summary
Kara looks at her, eyes scanning, searching for something in Lena’s expression, some kind of tell. Lena doesn’t give her one.
Instead, she keeps her voice light, controlled, twisting the knife with precision. “Was it easy?”
Kara frowns. “What?”
“Moving on,” Lena says, taking a slow breath, setting the glass down carefully behind her, “finding someone. Falling in love. Was it easy?”
Kara’s mouth opens slightly, then closes again. Lena watches her struggle, and there’s something bitterly satisfying about it. Finally, finally Kara feels like this, like the way Lena has felt for two fucking years.
Kara exhales, voice softer now, careful in a way that makes Lena’s stomach turn. “It wasn’t like that.”
Lena scoffs before she can stop herself. “No? Because from where I’m standing, it looks exactly like that.”
OR
Kara and her wife buy the house next to Lena and her husband's. Jack enjoys BBQs, Kara is in need of a fake screwdriver, Joan likes flowers, Lena wants to kill her.

Summary
Midway through dessert, Kara reached for Lena’s hand under the table. Not obviously. Not dramatically. Just laced their fingers like she’d done it a hundred times before - which, by now, she had.
Lena let her.
She was wearing a simple white gold band on her middle finger - an old ring, unremarkable in design but heavy in meaning. It had been her mother’s. She wore it more out of habit than sentiment, always on the same finger, always on the right hand.
Kara played with it idly while James and Nia argued about movie runtimes. She twisted it once. Then again. Then, without asking, without even glancing over, she slid it off Lena’s middle finger and onto her ring finger.
Lena didn’t react. Didn’t flinch. Kara kissed her hand once - absentminded, almost thoughtless - and kept holding it. Interlinked their fingers, didn’t let go for the rest of the evening.
It wasn’t a proposal. It wasn’t even a promise. And yet, Lena’s heart lurched like she’d been hit in the chest with something tender and irreversible.
OR
Lena is convinced she's found the love of her life, which would be ideal if said love of her life wasn't convinced she would ruin everything. Lena's heirloom ring is a paid actor.

Summary
“You’re gorgeous.” Lena murmured.
It landed like a stone in water. Not a compliment. A confession.
Kara turned toward her.
“Say it again.”
Lena hesitated. “You’re gorgeous.”
Kara’s heart did something painful and bright. “You mean that?”
“Of course I do.” Lena said.
So Kara kissed her.
OR
Lena has a tendency to ruin what she loves the most. Kara becomes very aware of it, and then decides she's not going to let Lena do her usual this time around.

Summary
By 5:45 AM she’s drenched and silently grateful that Jack doesn’t try to high-five her after cooldown. She walks to the café in the lobby and orders a black coffee from a barista who’s too tired to care that her ponytail is soaked and she looks like someone who files lawsuits for sport. She doesn’t sit. She stands by the window and sips the coffee like it’s a punishment. It is bitter and acidic and entirely undeserving of a pastry accompaniment.
She pulls out her phone. She will not check Kara’s Instagram story. She does not check Kara’s Instagram story. She definitely will not check Kara’s Instagram story.
... She absolutely checks Kara’s Instagram story.
The photo is artfully out of focus. A table. A hand. A whisky glass with condensation. The caption: good company, better drinks.
Lena stares at the hand. Manicured. Red polish. Not hers.
She locks her phone, drops it in her bag, and downs the rest of her coffee like a shot. The burn matches the muscle strain in her legs, and there’s a twisted satisfaction in that symmetry.
OR
Kara's moving on. Lena finds herself at the gym most mornings to try and not go complete insane over it.

Summary
At the door, she hesitated. “Do you want me to come back?”
Lena stepped forward then. Just enough. Not a plea - never a plea - but something else, something more exposed.
“I want you to want to.”
Kara kissed her. It was careful. Not out of hesitation, but reverence. She let it linger. When they pulled apart, neither of them smiled.
And that was it.
Kara left the house, the street, the city she loved like a person who didn’t love her back. She climbed into the cab and watched the Heath recede. Her hands were cold. So long, London.
She didn’t cry. She didn’t think she would. She had cried for this relationship weeks ago - in bed, in silence, after one of their good days, which always felt more dangerous than the bad ones. She had already mourned the version of them that had gone soft around the edges. What she was leaving now was something sharper. Not broken. Just stripped.
OR
Lena moves to London for work, Kara follows like a good girlfriend. Lena is busy and fears she's made Kara's life more complicated, Kara finds herself relating to a greylag goose with a limp in the Heath. Everything is messy.

They’re all wrong. Every single one of them.
And Kara Danvers has never been particularly good at listening anyway.

Summary
“Maybe it always goes wrong because none of them are Kara.”
The silence is immediate and catastrophic.
Andrea actually puts down her fork.
Jack blinks twice, slowly. “Kara?”
Sam just says, “Oh no.”
“The journalist?” Andrea asks, incredulous.
“Danvers?” Jack adds. “You mean the one you used to pick fights with like it was a contact sport? The one you simped over so hard you forgot how verbs worked?”
“I didn’t simp.” Lena says, indignantly.
“You got nothing done for six months,” Andrea says. “You started writing emails in lowercase. You called a marketing intern ‘Kara’ once. Her name was Rachel.”
Lena shrugs. “It was a confusing time.”
OR
Lena gets drunk at a bachelorette's party and tells Kara - aloof, non-committal Kara - she'd marry her. Inevitably, Kara withdraws, Lena tries to look for her in a handful of people before realizing freedom isn't all it's made out to be and decides to give it one more shot - more specifically, one more call.

Summary
Before Kara could reply, the woman from the beach appeared at Lena’s side with a drink in hand and a bright, oblivious smile. Marissa-slash-Melissa looked between them and rested a hand on the back of Lena’s chair.
“Hey, I was hoping I’d run into you,” she said. “I didn’t catch your name the other day after our kiss on the beach.”
Lena smiled with the polite detachment of someone performing damage control on autopilot. “Taylor.”
Kara turned her head so slowly it could’ve been for comedic effect, but the look on her face was anything but amused.
Marissa looked at Kara, then back at Lena. “This your friend?”
“Something like that,” Lena said, not bothering to elaborate. “We’re taking a break.”
Kara’s hand clenched around her glass. “Oh, for fuck’s sake.”
OR

Summary
It was the four of them - Lena, Andrea, Sam, and Jess - which meant the barbs would be affectionate, the snacks underwhelming, and the judgments inevitable. They sat around Andrea’s living room, sprawling and cross-legged, expensive throw blankets dragged off the back of armchairs and carelessly tucked around ankles. Jess claimed the entire couch in a diagonal and handed Lena a glass of wine without asking.
“Drink that and try not to look like you’re waiting to be cross-examined.” Jess said.
“I’m not.” Lena replied, sitting primly in the armchair. She took a sip. It was a Viognier, bold and dry. She hated how much she liked it.
Andrea raised an eyebrow. “You are. She is. Isn’t she?”
“She is.” Sam said, lifting her own glass.
Lena exhaled, but not with enough amusement to be read as surrender. “This is going to be about Kara, isn’t it.”
“No,” Andrea said, far too quickly. “It’s going to be about you. Kara is just a… symptom.”

Summary
“She said she didn’t want the name.” Lena says finally.
Kara doesn’t move. “The name?”
“Luthor.”
Kara hums. “I sure as hell do.”
Lena shifts slightly. “You’re not supposed to.”
Kara turns her head and looks at her with that maddening, grounded affection she seems to carry in surplus. “It sounds like a thunderstorm. Luthor. It’s badass. If I can ever get you to marry me, I’m using that name.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“I’m serious.” Kara props herself up on one elbow. “It’s powerful and sharp and dramatic. I love it.”
“You love me.”
“I love both,” Kara says, dragging a finger down Lena’s sternum, soft but certain. “But the name is really hot.”
OR
Lena's exes have never quite understood her, so when Lena starts dating Kara and notices she's in no shape or form intimidated or scared by what she sees, by who Lena is, the Luthor magnate is baffled.

Summary
It turns out it is way, way worse than she could have ever imagined.
Not immediately. At first, things feel deceptively stable. The sex is addictive, sure, and Lena’s new taste for leather and cruelty occasionally makes Kara feel like she’s living in someone else’s body, but there’s a rhythm to it. A balance. A shared lie.
Lena is careful, composed, always ten steps ahead. Her public image remains pristine - tech visionary, reformed genius, philanthropist. She still makes guest appearances on panels about AI ethics. She still donates to orphanages. She still shows up at friends’ celebrations with gifts worth the average American’s monthly wages. She still kisses Kara’s jaw with the utmost tenderness after she’s made her come so hard she forgets her own name.
OR
Lena's reinventing her own brand of justice. Everyone else is concerned.

Summary
Kara let the screen dim in her hand and set the phone beside her on the bed, facing up. She stared at the blank ceiling again, as if it might yield answers. What she couldn’t understand - what refused to make any kind of emotional or narrative sense - was how someone could say You’re it for me one month and disappear the next. Not disappear completely. That would’ve been easier. Lena hadn’t vanished; she’d diluted. Fragmented. Slipped sideways into a version of herself that had no Kara-shaped contour.
There were still texts. Emails. The occasional forwarded article. Once, a video of a café pianist Lena said reminded her of the hotel lobby in Florence. That one had destroyed Kara for an entire afternoon. But none of it felt like Lena. Not the one who made declarations. Not the one who pressed promises into Kara’s skin like she meant them.
And maybe that was the problem. Maybe Kara had mistaken passion for permanence. Or maybe permanence had always been a lie they agreed to believe at the same time.
OR
Kara's POV on the post-mortem of what would've, could've, should've been her end game.

Summary
Andrea’s the only one who doesn’t clap.
The meeting ends with a dull chorus of affirmation, nodding heads and blazers shifting as they rise. There are follow-up documents to be signed, a licensing brief that will pass through too many hands before returning to Lena with a dozen unnecessary annotations. She lets the others go ahead, pretending to skim something on her tablet. Andrea waits by the elevator, arms crossed, expression unreadable.
“That was Kara’s voice,” she says flatly, skipping hello. “Don’t lie. I’ve known her longer.”
Lena doesn’t blink. “It’s a composite. Public audio sources, press clips, a few DEO archive scraps. Legally unproblematic.”
Andrea narrows her eyes. “You don’t do anything without a reason.”
“Good thing my reasons belong to me, then,” Lena replies, stepping into the elevator and tapping the button without looking back.

Summary
“I made a mistake.”
“No,” Lena said. “You made a choice. You published my life, stripped of context, sanitized of nuance, packaged for intellectual consumption. Don’t insult me by calling that a mistake.”
“I didn’t know the government would respond like that.”
“And I didn’t know you were still capable of that level of naivety.” Lena’s mouth twisted slightly, not a smile. More a betrayal of her effort not to look disgusted. “But that’s the thing, isn’t it? Either you’re dumber than I thought, or more calculated than I gave you credit for. Pick your brand of damage.”

“I’m not wearing the shoes.”
“You can wear your own shoes.”
Lena looked down at her house slippers. “These are Boss.”
Kara took a sip of her smoothie. “Then we’ll take it easy.”
They didn’t take it easy. Ten minutes in, Kara was moving with casual precision, tapping balls just out of Lena’s reach, smiling like she wasn’t being infuriating on purpose. Lena was sweating lightly, hair sticking to the back of her neck, and cursing every life decision that had led her to this moment, including - but not limited to - dating an overachiever with natural hand-eye coordination.

“You’re going to outlive me.” Lena said finally, her voice flat.
Kara didn’t react immediately. “Yeah.”
“And you’ll remember the worst parts of me.”
“I already do.”
Lena turned her head. Kara was watching the ceiling, her face unreadable in the half-light.
“You’ve been insufferable since we met.” Kara added flatly.
Lena snorted once, a quiet exhale with too much history packed into it.

Summary
Lena shrugged. “I might sell the penthouse.”
That earned a chorus of groans.
“No, you won’t.” Andrea said.
“I might.”
Jack rolled his eyes. “Why? Because the walls remember her?”
“Because every drawer has something of hers in it,” Lena replied, more sharply than she meant to. “Because I can’t walk into the kitchen without hearing her goddamn laugh. Because the shower still smells like her shampoo. Because I have never, in my entire life, been haunted so casually.”
The silence that followed wasn’t pitying. It was worse. It was understanding.
OR
Kara moves to the other side of the world to live a new life with a new career and a new girlfriend and Lena doesn't know enough about civil engineering to build herself a little bridge to get over it. Jack turned to Lena. “On a scale from one to ‘I’ve memorized her new girlfriend’s LinkedIn,’ how stable are we feeling tonight?”
“I don’t know her name.” Lena said.
“That doesn’t answer the question.”
Lena gave them both a look - not sharp enough to be a warning, but cool enough to suggest she was deeply unimpressed. “Kara’s life is her own. I’m not interested.”
Jack looked delighted. “Oh, excellent. That’s what you always say before you do something reckless.”

Both Kara and Lena press the reset button on their relationship. Summary
Kara looked down briefly, then back up. “You don’t trust me.”
“No,” Lillian said. “But I don’t need to. Lena does. That’s the unfortunate arithmetic of family. We don’t get to choose who they hand the knife to.”
Kara tilted her head. “And you think I’m holding a knife?”
“I think,” Lillian said, “that you love her. And I think that kind of love - the quiet, undramatic kind, the kind that doesn’t need to be named every hour to remain real - is the most dangerous kind there is.”
She picked up her spoon, tapped it once against the edge of her dish. The shell cracked cleanly. She didn’t look up as she spoke next.
“Because that kind of love survives failure. And people who survive failure become hard to remove.”
OR
Is Lillian Luthor happy with the fact her daughter is dating a Kryptonian alien? Of course not. But the blonde's made it clear she's not going anywhere, and Lena seems to be happy now, and while Lillian hates to admit it, Lena's happiness means quite a bit to her (she will deny this in public).

Summary
Lena held her gaze. There was no drama in it. No cinematic music swell. Just two people, years too late, being honest in a hallway.
“I’ll always wonder.” Kara said.
Lena didn’t answer. She waited until Kara was gone, then turned on her heel and walked into the elevator. She didn’t press the button for her floor. She just stood there, alone, as the doors closed. And tried very hard not to picture the look on Kara’s face when she said loved.
It hadn’t sounded past tense.
Not really.
OR
Star-crossed lovers, ships passing in the night, something that happens incidentally and should not have mattered but it did and now Lena Luthor's dealing with the consequences of that never coming to fruition. So she dates, and she watches Kara date people that are not her and maybe it's annoying her infinitely more than she can put into words. And maybe, maybe the 'what if' is what's going to choke her out.
