Kenny grinned and produced an empty can from his pocket, letting it spin across his fingers. “Oh don’t worry,” he said cheerfully. “You will.”

Lévis stared at the pile of wrapped gifts like they were unexploded bombs.
“Remind me again,” he said flatly, “why I agreed to this.”
Kenny beamed. “Because it’s fun!”
“Incorrect,” Lévis snapped. “Because you threatened to tell people about the balcony.”
Domina, standing beside him, tilted his head. “I thought you agreed because you said it would be ‘socially suspicious’ to refuse.”
Lévis hissed, “Stop remembering things accurately.”
Domina nodded. “Understood.”

“You passed,” Lévis said, voice rough.
Lovie laughed, breathless and disbelieving. “Apparently.”
For a heartbeat, neither of them spoke.
Then Lévis reached out and pulled him into a fierce, unapologetic embrace. Lovie stiffened in surprise, then relaxed, arms coming up to cling just as tightly.
“I’m proud of you,” Lévis said quietly. “So damn proud.”
Lovie’s voice wavered. “I thought I’d fail.”
“But you didn’t,” Lévis interrupted.
