Summary
Bruce Wayne becomes a legal guardian shortly after a traveling circus comes to Gotham. It's only fitting that his ward is one big mystery for him to solve.
Richard was a very quiet boy. Bruce had only heard him speak once, a quick, unintelligible word to Alfred that seemed to be a thank you. He had stumbled taking his first steps out of the juvenile detention center, and Alfred had swiftly rescued him from face-planting on cold concrete. After that, complete silence from the boy.

Zucco swallowed, carefully following the gun as Dick's hands trembled. He flicked the safety off just like he'd seen Zucco's men do. Pop Haly owned a pistol, but he'd never let Dick near it. Little boys don't needa be anywhere near guns, Dickie-boy.
Well, that was too bad. Dick had one, and he was going to shoot it and take Zucco's pathetic, destructive life before he killed someone else.

Summary
The first time they'd done something like this, Dick had slipped out of the ropes in the middle of Bruce explaining the exercise objective to him, catching the man entirely off guard. The knots had been ridiculously easy, and Dick is certain that he learned how to tie more complex knots at the age of four.
The next time, Bruce had actually made the ropes tight, used trickier knots, and timed him on his escape. From there, it had descended into all sorts of restraints with all sorts of different scenarios. Seriously, Dick wasn't sure if he'd ever be hung by his ankles, but Bruce seemed happy to know that in such an event, it would take him an average of thirty-one seconds to escape.
This new element, however, might actually screw Dick over.

Summary
The steel blue of Bruce's eyes reflected poorly in the darkness. Only the thick veil of exhaustion and frustration kept them lit. Either way, Dick preferred them like this—even if Bruce was miserable—because it was better than the empty, soulless dips his guardian experienced.
Dick and Bruce, as usual, have an important conversation in the middle of the night.

Mom lay flat on her back, legs bent to the left. In the darkness she glowed. Like a meteorite with space crystals breaking off, her pearls exploded around her. Her eyes stared into the night sky, glistening with unshed tears.
For a long moment, he stared, uncomprehendingly, at his parents on the filthy alley floor.
"What?" He whispered.
The man lunged forward, snatching up a few scattered pearls and the wallet which had flown from Dad’s hands. He left Bruce then, standing in the middle of a collapsed universe.
"What?" He repeated.
Bruce unwillingly relives the defining moments of his life. Everything that made Bruce Wayne into the man he was today. Everything that made him tick.
His ward just happens to be an unfortunate witness.
