He was a material witness in his parents’ murder but he didn’t see any recognizable features and was unable to be of any productive assistance when his own sketch artist visited. He had no idea the man’s identity: Crime Alley’s shadows shrouded his bandana-covered face. Plus, it didn’t help that it was deemed a “simple mugging gone wrong” and that he was a boy of privilege that was gifted a rich life and a live-in butler with a safe house. So no, despite material witnesses not having a batch of good luck in Gotham, Bruce Wayne was one of the fortunate ones.
This time?
Who knew what this man was involved in: it could be mob-related. In this town, it was a sure bet. And his name supposedly started with a Z, at least from what Gordon nearly let slip. He'd have to check his databases... Bruce cleared his throat and gestured towards the boy who was still sitting and staring unblinking at the ground, the look of a kid who didn’t want to be around anyone... except his parents.
“So… now what?”

Dick’s blood froze as he stared at the advancing man in numb horror. The panic from before curdled into something colder—dread. Terror. His throat clamped shut like a vice, air catching halfway up his windpipe. His muscles locked so tight it felt like invisible hands were squeezing the life out of him—the truth settling over him like a cold, suffocating weight.
This man wasn’t Zucco. The Captain wasn’t here, and Dick had woken up in an unfamiliar bed.
Bile rose in his throat.
There was only one explanation.
He had been sold.
And the man in front of him... was his new owner:
The Batman.
(in other words, Bruce is an emotionally constipated pirate who finds a small, terrified mer and thinks yeah, i should adopt him.)

With a gurgled scream he's tossed back into the ocean. The waters rush to embrace their stolen child, but now, instead of their enclosure being a comfort, it's suffocating.
He thrashes, desperate, trying to swim but... but he can't.
Panic and fear washes over him as he slowly starts to sink to the bottom of the ocean floor, a trail of blood flowing from the spots his fins were supposed to be.
He's a shark mer. He needs his fins to swim, but... but they're gone. Taken. Stolen. Sawed away by those monsters. His fins... are gone.
Dick lets out a terrified shrill as he sinks down, down, down.... drowning.
For years he's been told to stay clear of the monsters above the ocean. Been told how there were humans that wouldn't hesitate to tear his fins off his body. But never in his life had he expected for it to actually happen to him. Now Dick's drowning, unable to move, defenseless, and... No.
No, no, no, no—
There's a something big swimming right toward him.
(OR Bruce Wayne finds a dying, de-finned shark mer and he does what anyone sensible would do: he takes him in and looks after him, all the while wondering if 26 is a bit too young to adopt.)

The cape rustles. Pulls tighter. Batman presses against his side, and for a moment, Robin allows himself to melt into the touch. Ghosts of Christmas past. It would be nice, and in a way it is, if not for the simple fact that he can't help but remember. That he can't allow himself to forget. Dick isn't the right ghost.
"No one can," Bruce says, his eyes fixed on the flickering streetlight.

Robin looks murderous. “How could you leave him? Did you… did you think you could do better than the Batman?”
“I… I—” Words fail him, and Dick looks down, ashamed.
Robin laughs, cruelly. “You really thought you could do better than him? All by yourself?” He narrows his eyes, and now, he looks nothing short of betrayed. “Was it for someone else?” He says so quietly, like a secret—something so impossible it couldn’t even be considered, much less stated out loud.
“Dickie…”
Robin takes his lack of answer as a yes. “And yet,” He lets out another desperate laugh, “You’re still here. You came back? He let you crawl back to him? Pathetic.” Robin’s voice is so contemptuous Dick flinches. Steph squeezes his shoulder. “What a fool you were, thinking you could do better than him!”
...
Or, a younger, happier Dick Grayson gets sent to his future, and is devastated to learn how exactly his future unfolded, so he tries to discover what happened between him and the most important person in his life.
