Instead of being treated in a hospital, Hannibal proposes a marriage. He would legally be able to prevent Will from being institutionalised and under Chilton's thumb. When Will receives the treatment for his encephalitis, he asks for a divorce.
Instead of honouring Will's request, Will learns the truth behind the prenuptial agreement and marriage licence he had signed. He plays the “unstable” husband, embarrassing Hannibal repeatedly. Systematically destroying his husband's reputation just to leave the marriage.

How sad that the poor little Targaryen Prince got exiled to the Free Cities! Trading in his bejeweled cloaks, fancy armor and warm chambers for even more gold and jewels, bountiful feasts and pleasures of the most depraved kind— what horror!
Sympathy for a royal seems misplaced by a knight of his past, he knows that. Especially when he and Aerion shared such an antagonistic history. But, seeing the young prince be dragged quickly by the arm, legs struggling to keep up with the swarming man that was Ser Meryn, incited a pang of pity in his stomach that would not leave.
