Summary
It's summer, when Karin first meets Lars.
She looks across at Gus then, who hasn't moved from his seat. His attention has skipped sideways now, going to the other dark building in front of them.
The garage, Karin supposes.

Small moments and conversation snippets that didn't make it into other works in this series.
"How are you so good at this?"
Karin shrugs, digging in the glovebox for the ziplock of trail mix still stored in there from their drive down.
"Healthy childhood," she says simply.

"Is it?" Gus digs, feeling distinctly like the only sane one here. "It's our future flea infestation too."

Gus tries to have a conversation he thinks Lars might need, unaware he's missing the mark.
"Are you?" he presses. "Gay?"
Still, Lars doesn't react. He keeps staring at the same spot on the floor ahead of them, and when he does answer, it's in a voice gone tight and strange.
"No," he replies, hollow in it.

Summary
Dagmar had gotten the phone call. She'd called him in turn, and together he and Gus and Karin had sat in her office whilst she explained the news to them with steady, careful clarity.
Lars was autistic.
That's why he was the way that he was.
His face is hidden, dipped down into the scuff of his duvet. His whole bed's a mess, a tangle of sheets and blankets kicked aside, one of his pillows tucked down against his body.
Something's off, about the image. It keeps Karin stuck by the door, and when she speaks again it comes out hesitant, unsure.
"Are you sick?"
