She was frozen in indecision.
She considered bolting for the door, right then. No explanation offered. Her just... gone. She deliberated it.
Nat realized then that he had backed away and turned his back to her. He stood there, busying himself with some small thing, and waiting. Her no-goodbye option had occurred to him too.
Not only had it occurred to him, he was offering it.
She deliberated.

This story takes place about six months after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

“Steve,” she said abruptly. “There’s a secret I’ve kept from you.”
Steve nearly joked that there were a lot of secrets she kept from him. That was her nature. But he sensed the gravity of her point. He had thought she had unburdened herself with her earlier disclosure, but apparently not. He waited quietly for her to continue.
“I’m not sorry I did it,” she said matter-of-factly. “But...” She turned her body toward him, but kept her eyes on the stars and pursed her lips together. “If it damages your trust in me now, I will regret that.”
“We don’t have to be open books to be friends, Nat,” Steve offered. “We’ve established that, haven’t we?”
Her gaze came back down to earth. “Well at first, it wasn’t your business,” she said with a small smile. “And then it was. But it made no difference by then.” She was frowning now.
“It’s hard to know when to say certain things, isn’t it?” Steve said with a pang of guilt.
Nat nodded. “It is. But you need to know this now.”
He shifted to look straight at her. “So tell me,” he offered in his friendliest tone.

Bucky threw his gaze to the far wall. “If this…” He trailed off and shook his head vigorously. “If this fix doesn’t work, Natalia, I don’t want you here.”
“If this fix doesn’t work,” Nat explained gently, “and I’ve done the triggering…”
She stepped closer to him, close enough that Bucky could feel her body heat radiate across the bare flesh of his arm. He could feel the soft currents of her breath brushing his skin.
She continued. “Then you’re under my control, taking my commands.” Her smile curved further into something mischievous. “I’m good with that scenario,” she whispered.

“A seed catalog,” Bucky said grumpily, as he shook his head and adjusted his gloves again. “You’re kidding me with this right? I mean, okay. You found a nice house. It’s too quiet here, but okay. It’s a nice house. But picking out seeds? To grow? Like we know anything about that?”
“You grew sunflowers,” Steve offered as he picked his ax back up. “And potatoes.”
Bucky’s eyes widened with incredulity. “For science projects! In jars at school. That’s not farming. Steve. Do you have any concept of what you’re trying to do here?”
“Yeah. I’m trying to put up with a very grumpy and opinionated bum who’s not helping with much work yet.”
Bucky scoffed, and shifted out of his slouch to reach for his own ax.
Steve felt he could walk on air. Bucky was beside him, swinging an ax and complaining about it.
This was all he wanted.
