A Destiel re-telling of the UK 1946 film 'A Matter Of Life And Death' (released in the USA as 'Stairway To Heaven').
Castiel believes in free will, destiny and all that jazz; he is an angel after all. He has watched over his namesake, young Englishman Castiel James 'Jimmy' Novak, from the latter's birth, and is upset when the man talks over the radio with handsome American pilot Dean Winchester who is fated to die minutes later. So the angel takes 'measures' that save Dean's life, then arranges for him and Jimmy to meet in person before the whole thing can be sorted out.
But of course one does not defy the will of Heaven, let alone Death himself, and expect to get away with it. Dean's happy days with Jimmy come to an end when the airman collapses in a restaurant and, whilst his earthly body undergoes an operation in hospital, his soul is put on trial. Worse, a dark shadow from his own past returns to haunt him, and the man he loves must show he is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice. It is a matter of life and death - but whose death? -

That wasn't the kind of person I was. John Winchester would never kill an innocent human for any reason, including getting to the demon under its skin. He would have let the demon go tell Crowley, would have greeted the armies of Hell head-on. But I wasn't John Winchester anymore. I was what was left of him.

I wrote this for thefaultinourglowclouds on Tumblr, who wanted a fanfic based on my idea of a demon John Winchester. The story takes place right where the season eight finale left off, so Team Free Will is dealing with Metatron and fallen angels in addition to the demon dad trouble.
Contains blatant Destiel, blatant Gabriel/Garth (Gabrigar? Fitzbriel?), heavily implied Samifer, and briefly implied Crobby.
Also contains a couple of major character deaths, but since this is Supernatural, one of them is only temporary. The other you'll be happy about.
Oh, and there's an orgy. A totally plot-relevant orgy.
