The storm outside the ship continued to flare, Kell’s heart continued to beat, beat in sync with Lila’s. Eventually their breath’s mimicked each other’s as well. And it was easy to pretend everything was alright. That it always had been. Kell found it hard to believe his life had once been full of sorrow, death, destruction, pain and so much more. That it still was. Sometimes it surfaced. But never when Lila shared his bed. Just sometimes when sitting on the deck alone or wandering off to himself (because he did need alone time even though Lila was a formidable company). Then he could sit and wonder if he could have somehow stopped it all.

Talya’s body was cold, but Holland’s heart felt colder than anything he’d ever felt. Colder than the snow on his cheeks as he made his way to the Scorched Bone and colder than the pint that was thrown at him as soon as he walked through the doors. He ignored it. The rejection he’d faced from his former lover that day was worse than anything else he’d face at the hands of the cruel White Londoners. He decided he wouldn’t have a drink and magicked the liquid out of his hair, skin, clothes and then crept out the back door, dodging a whistling dagger and a shot glass. As soon as he was out the door, he knew he was alone, so he cut thinly into his palm, pressed it against the marble wall, and whispered.
“As Travars.”
The back of the Rising Sun in Red London was also empty, but the din of the patrons inside leaked out merrily and danced around his head. He pressed his back into the stones of the building and sighed, crossing his arms. He couldn't believe it'd come to this.

His brain won’t let his body just rest, not when it could parade gory image after vile memory after terror-laden vision in front of his eyes. Hours and hours worth of them. Successful nights ended in the small hours of the morning, his back soaked in sweat and lungs struggling to fill with air. The failures began and ended with him wide awake in his favorite worn armchair.
Kell pulls his eyes away from the mirror, dropping his gaze to the polished wood. They drop to his hands. The left was flat, steady. The fingers of the right shook, a barely-there tremor that not even the drink could calm."
Great War AU: It is December 1919 and Arnes is still reeling from five years of war. It's country, capital city, monarchy and people are left in pieces. In the midst of a struggling recovery, Kell struggles to work through his own memories, nightmares, and injuries.

In another flash, the seriousness is gone. Kell Maresh, a flippant young man with too much responsibility and knows it, re-emerges. He snuffs out his cigarette and stands, buttoning his coat. He smiles at Holland, pleasant as ever. “Have a nice lunch, Mister Vosijk.”
