Amber Largo is 8 years old when Daddy finds out that Marni is pregnant again and gets all cold. He doesn't spend any time at all with her or Pavi or Luigi anymore and Amber tries to convince herself that it's a good thing. She misses Daddy, but she knows why he stopped looking at her. Amber’s taller now and people who don't know any better keep saying she has her mother's eyes, her mother's hair, her mother's cheeks, and it's not nearly as much of a compliment to be like Mama anymore. Mama left.

Noelle's father died from an illness that Noelle unfortunately caught herself due to "bad genes," and their mother, after her father (Rudy) caught his illness, disappeared off the face of the planet without a trace. Or that's what Dess told Noelle. Noelle's illness keeps her from going outside, and Dess always tells her how dangerous the outside world is. About how there are determinatoxin addicts that fill the streets, violence and bloodshed at every corner, etc. One day, while Dess was out late at night. She decided while Dess was out that she wanted to see the world for herself. It couldn't be as bad as Dess told her, right? Especially all of that sick stuff about "The Reaping Rook", the mass organ failure epidemic that rose to power the big tyrannical company, HeartCo, it can't be AS bad as she says it is. Right?
