Summary
The year is 2012. Darcy Lewis, a S.H.I.E.L.D. lab assistant (or intern) to astrophysicist Jane Foster, is transferred with her boss to Norway to build a specialized prison cell. Shortly after the prisoner arrives along with the Tesseract, Darcy is accidentally transported from the lab. Suddenly she is a Vinlander--a person from the lands far to the west--in Viking territory torn by warring clans during the late 8th century.
Hurled back in time by the Tesseract, an object she is unable to hold and control let alone understand, Darcy is catapulted into the intrigues of Viking kings, queens, warriors, and Gods that may threaten her life...and steal her heart. For here Loki, the Norse God of Mischief, shows her protection and a love so intense that Darcy becomes a woman torn between wanting to return to her own time where he is a hated enemy and the desire to be with the version of him she loves...and between vastly different versions of her own two irreconcilable lives.

Prince Bjorn Ironside-Lothbrok, status lots of ex-wives, some just up and leave others he is the one leaving, some are dead, and a few are crazy but in some way, he loved every one of them. But he never loved any of them how he loved her, the mother of his firstborn baby, the baby no one but the two of them knew about. She was quick to get away when she found out she was carrying his child and he was in an arranged marriage. First Bjorn fell for commoner Torvi, the daughter of a local market owner, a fisherman. She is his one true love, someone that he knows he will never be able to live without knowing something about even if it is just that she is still breathing and safe. That is all he cares for, her safety. Then he falls for Porrun, who was a slave, she left after he married her and they had two children, Uhtred and Siggy. After Porrun there was another wife, Snaefrid they had two children together, another boy-girl set of children, Gudrod and Charalotta. After Snaefrid's death, he moved on with Ingrid, whom he had three boys with Viggo, Axel, and Ebbe. Then the commoner Torvi married up in the world, first with a Borg then with the ex-prince of Denmark and Norway, Erlendur Horkisson. Her life changed a lot.

In this Alternate Universe, women lead and men serve. Thyri Siggasdóttir took on the mantle of the throne in the wake of the passing of her mother, the beloved Queen Siggy. With her advisor and friend, Gyda Lagerthasdóttir, at her side, she is in the process of raising Kattegat from humble village to a key port of trade. In the late afternoon warmth, Athelstan felt heavy and sunken with something. Like desire, or the deep pulling possibility of it, that tied like strings around his limbs and kept him sprawled against the prow as Ragnar towered above him. It felt like there was a point between them, a balancing point, that kept them fixed in those positions, one above and one below the other at either end of the boat. And the feeling of watchfulness was still there, which had grown between them as they worked, side by side watching the water, with sunlight flashing on its surface and dark shapes flickering beneath it. They were watching the water, and each other at the same time.

Summary
I'm rewatching the series from the beginning and really enjoyed the drunken and drug fueled revelry at Uppsala. I saw the flirtation between Thyri and Athelstan and just had to explore that. She's fresh out of the hideous match with the elderly, selfish Earl Bjarni and Athelstan is full of Viking-fueled testosterone with less and less of his former Christian guilt. The two come together in the most Viking of ways, full of ale, on hallucinogens, laying in moss, under the shadow of the temple of Uppsala and without any shame for the pursuit of physical pleasure.

By request: An edited version of my Athelnar series, for those not into the NC-17 level sex scenes.
There IS still plenty of sex in here. There are far too many critical conversations and plot points that happen during sex scenes for me to redact them entirely. I have, however, toned it down considerably. It's a lot more euphemistic, a few scenes are fade-to-black, and I did cut a couple of PWPs entirely. It's more or less on par with canon sex, though probably closer to the unedited versions than the ones History airs. (Also, the non-con warnings are for references, not actual non-con scenes.)
Basically, if you're not squeamish about sex in general but you'd rather read for plot than porn, this is your version.
