The burning lodge is behind them as they all celebrate their survival through tears.
Getting ready to finally leave this cursed mountain, Mike has second thoughts on whether Josh is actually dead in the mines or not, this confliction is enough for him to turn tail back down those tunnels in search of his friend, promising the others that he will be back.
With the wendigos finally gone and burned, you would think there's no more problems for Mike to deal with on his adventure. Though Mike's own body seems to be his enemy this time.
OR: Mike goes back for Josh in the mines, has a not so great time. But hey, it's worth it for Josh, right?

Summary
There’s something settled in the pit of Mike’s stomach, something he hadn’t even felt while standing in that living room, staring down that creepy fucking thing that couldn’t have possibly been Hannah. He thinks the last time he felt this particular brand of awful was when he’d pointed that pistol at Emily. It feels like he’s swallowed a stone, or a piece of hail the size of his fist, the kind he’d only seen once in his life.
“Mike,” the detective who’s interrogating him prompts gently, and Mike hears it as if through water. Guilt, his mind supplies. The stone in your stomach you can’t swallow is guilt. But it’s something more than that too; it’s love, searing and freezing and indigestible.

Summary
Mike ignores it mostly, focuses on getting back to normal. Tries and fails to get back into the swing of college, has awkward get togethers with friends he feels like he has nothing in common with anymore, joins a gym, goes on a few dates that go appallingly.
It might not sound like it but he's doing well.
Like Dr Hill says you don't get over something like that, not ever, it's always going to be there and pretending it isn't isn't going to help. What you can do though is learn to live with it, get used to it. People, Dr Hill says, can get used to just about anything.
And then they find Josh.

He recalls just how many of his friends died directly in front of him, and almost wishes he could've been one of them. The weight of the night crashes down on him like an avalanche, and he finds himself lost.
Late one night, he gets a call that makes his heart jump into his throat.
