    Summary

Dennis Whitaker disappeared on a Tuesday.

By Wednesday morning, every Whitaker-owned business in western Nebraska had a photograph of him locked away in a safe.

Nobody outside the family was supposed to know he escaped.

The Whitakers weren’t ranchers. Medical school had been useful.

Every organization needed a doctor willing to stitch bullet wounds, keep men alive after deals went sideways, and ask no questions.

Dennis asked too many. Then Annie was born.

The Whitakers hire the Cody brothers, legendary manhunters known for finding anyone, anywhere. It’s supposed to be another straightforward job: locate the runaway son, bring him home, collect the money.

But when Pope Cody finally finds Dennis, he doesn’t see a dangerous criminal.

He sees an exhausted young doctor pulling double shifts, raising an infant on his own, and risking his life every night to save strangers.

The farther Pope looks into the Whitaker family, the clearer the truth becomes.

Now Pope has a choice: deliver Dennis back to the empire he escaped… or stand between the Whitakers and the only family Dennis has left.

    Summary

When Dennis agreed to cover shifts for Dr. Mohan on the night shift, he didn't think he would ever end up here. Kidnapped from the ambulance bay, his head pounding, and having to save the life of a man with limited medical supplies. That was supposed to be it. Somehow, he finds himself snatched up off a sidewalk, in the stables, in front of his home. There were no sacred spaces when you proved your worth.

In the middle of it all, Dennis is confused by the way Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbot are circling him. The way they'd reach out and brush their fingers against his skin. The way they made sure he ate, got rest, and stayed safe. It made him ache with something he hadn't felt in a long time.

    Summary

The older man laughed at his predicament. Then he did something terrible. He rolled up his sleeves for him. Dennis was damn near breathless when he got to the left hand. Jesus Christ, this will be a long day if Robby is already hovering and touching like this. He gets in moods where he likes to control what everyone does. Dennis is the one who bends to it the easiest, though, so he often bears the brunt. He didn’t even mind, which was probably the worst part.

When they walked out for the morning huddle, Trinity took one look at him and cackled. “My coat not good enough for ya? Or did you just wanna smell like daddy?” At least she had the decency to whisper it.

“Shut up. I should’ve never told you that.”'

Or in which Dennis has a rare condition that prevents him from feeling the physical sensation of pain. Jack and Robby have to find novel ways to punish him into taking better care of himself.

    Summary

In the Iron Lung, among the roots of a tree that was to never see the Sun, the Convict was dying. He didn't want to. But for one thing to live, another always had to die. Trees grew from soil, and soil was rot, and rot was the child of death. That was the ultimate circle of life.

The day Dr. Michael Robinavitch found out his favorite intern was a father was the same day he learned he was also a husband.

    By morning, both were gone.

Or: the day Dennis Whitaker learned that seven years of hiding can come undone by a single peanut.
