Shadow grips the echidna’s wrist when the other hand drifts down, keeping it in place as Dread continues to speak casually, “And both be in me care. Both be mine to appreciate and admire.”
The echidna changes course to his face, resting his palm on Shadow's cheek. Dread's bare paw pads are calloused as they stroke short, tan fur, thumb lingering to trace along the hedgehog's lips, "At the locations and time of me choosin' till I be satisfied. That /do/ be the agreement, don’t it, me treasure?”

Renegade is a practical, realistic man- he doesn’t have time to waste on things like sentimentality or fantasy. His relationship with Shadow doesn’t mean anything, it was literally just a matter of being in the right place and at the right time for some much needed stress relief. That the black hedgehog has a pretty face is a nice bonus.
Anyway, they know exactly where they stand in each other’s list of priorities and are content with their current arrangement. But sometimes, in the stillness of the witching hour, where reality blends with the world of dreams… and almost everything seems possible… Renegade can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he met Shadow in a time of peace and freedom. And well, if Shadow is up at this time, too, anyway, then maybe indulging in fantasy and sentimentality would be alright. Just this once.
