Usually the sight of Sue laughing or enjoying herself would bring an easy smile to Emily’s lips but watching her laugh with Austin, even if it wasn’t her usual full laugh where her eyes wrinkled and she covered her mouth, sent a stone into the pit of her stomach.
She climbs the stairs to her mother on the second floor and wonders just how long the weight in her stomach will last.

Blair Waldorf doesn’t like being reminded of Dan Humphrey. But that gap-toothed, curly haired man certainly had a knack for being completely unavoidable.
Firstly, the man was her best friend’s husband.
Secondly, he was a journalist, so she was bombarded by constant reminders of him.
That insufferable social climber was everywhere. She couldn’t even check her phone without scrolling past his selfies with Nate Archibald on her Instagram feed. Talk about the ghost of boyfriends past, haunting her ad infinitum.
In other words, Blair Waldorf doesn’t like being reminded of Dan Humphrey, because it's like being reminded of a life she could have had with him.

That was the year when, after spending the previous four years mourning the late Allison Humphrey, his father made the stunning decision to uproot the family from Chicago to New York. Manhattan, to be specific – the Upper East Side, to be even more specific – landing them smack dab into the very heart of Old New York society (although Dan would call it a viper’s nest before he would call it the heart of anything).
