He checks that, too, because she might take the flower, and she deserves a pretty flower for her potentially last, and maybe even first, present. It's still as pretty as he knew it’d be— he’d spent a long time deciding on it, after all— , and now he has no more reason to delay, and he knows he shouldn't.
He pauses after opening the door, his eyes straying over to his shelf full of plants: one glass for every person he's said goodbye to. It takes a deep breath for him to tear his eyes away, and he exits the room. Automatically, his feet lead him to his destination, the route to the abandoned building more familiar than it had any right to be.
