Past them, fuzzy and faint, she can see the ceramic mug shattered on the ground— a scratch on her palm dripping red, red blood onto the tile as white as pure snow. Big Bear, running, the knife— cold metal piercing her skin before she can really process it; agony she’s suffered a million times and never before; a thought buried beneath the pain: this is what it must have felt like for Chimney before he died. Then the struggle— scrabbling for the knife in the snow— taking the life of the man who took hers — and stumbling, blind and bleeding, across an endless snowscape.
Doug is dead. Doug is dead, she killed him, he’s dead, and Maddie Buckley is newly thirty-five years old heaving out sob after sob on the floor of her home, clinging to the sound of her brother calling out to her both now and in her memories.

“Yeah, hi,” she says, and it’s—that’s her. There’s no way that isn’t her. “I’m—I’m looking for Evan Buckley?”
Downstairs, he hears Hen begin to reply, something like “Can I ask why?” but his mind is going in circles; It can’t be her, please let it be her as he scrambles to drop the knife and tears himself away from the kitchen island, barely managing to stop himself from tripping over his own feet as he sprints. Bobby makes some kind of surprised noise behind him, a few guys turn to stare at him from the couches, but he makes it to the railing, grabbing onto the bars with his hands shaking. He looks down, past the trucks, to the wide space by the entrance, and-
“Maddie?”
Or: Maddie shows up at the firehouse instead of Buck's flat, looking for her little brother. He's just glad she came back.

She can’t help the way her eyes dart around, looking for the monsters that are going to jump out of the shadows. She knows the house is safe. Knows her family have spent the last day making sure of it. Buck changed the locks, Bobby and Chimney made sure the security system was up to date. Hen and Karen have helped too, keeping Jee safe and distracted. She’s never had so much fun as as she’s had in this past week, having sleepovers with her cousins. Logically, she knows she’s safe.
That doesn’t stop her looking in the shadows anyway.
