Jack sings along to the music playing over the kitchen speaker, swaying a little. He’s a terrible singer (medically diagnosed by Santos in a scathing review of his late night tunes), but he’s going through an Olivia Dean phase. Sue him.
The late summer sun is streaming through the open kitchen windows, painting everything gold as the breeze carries the sound of birdsong and passing conversation in. Robby is still out with Jake for an afternoon game of basketball, but due back any time.
He blows out a nervous breath, the velvet box in his pocket burning against his thigh.

When Jack gets off the plane after returning from his deployment overseas, he is more nervous than usual. Robby had announced that there was a surprise waiting for Jack – but little does Jack know the extent of that surprise!

Robby comes home to find a feverish Whitaker taking refuge on his sofa. A long night of delerium, high temperatures and nursely duties yawns before them.
Robby tried again, firmer this time. “Dennis.”
This time Dennis’s eyes opened.
Or nearly opened. They dragged halfway up, unfocused and glassy, stared somewhere just past Robby’s shoulder, then drifted away again as if holding him in view required too much effort.“You’re home,” Dennis whispered.
