It was in that exact instant that Hermione understood she’d run out of time.
Time had been running out for her since the day her Hogwarts letter arrived. Since she’d stepped onto Platform 9 ¾ with her parents hovering anxiously behind her. Since she’d met Harry for the first time. Since that ancient hat had been lowered onto her head and bellowed “Gryffindor!” for the entire Great Hall to hear.
Every choice she’d made after that had carried her further down this road.Every class taken. Every book devoured. Every spell mastered. Every friend made. Every danger survived.
Time had always been ticking away, she just hadn’t paid attention to how little of it she’d actually had and there was something almost cruelly ironic about that.

In 'Hermione, the Holmes', I originally intended for Hermione not to befriend Harry (or Ron) on the Hogwarts Express. But the story had other plans, going off in a completely different direction, thwarting both Voldemort and me.
This is not that story.
Halloween, 1994. Harry's name has been drawn from the Goblet of Fire; Ron turns his back on him, leaving Harry without a friend in the school. Except there's someone who does believe in him: Hermione Granger, who runs a study group, and offers to take him in and help him survive the Triwizard Tournament.
But how long can such harmony last, when the study group has students from all four houses?
