    A beat. And then, a violent in-drawing of breath. Connor gasps awake with a horrible rattling sound in his chest, limbs spasming to life on the floor. Eyes squeezed shut, face contorted in agony, he curls onto his side and coughs violently, retching up a vile black liquid.

    Markus is at his side immediately, eyes stinging with painful relief. “Oh, thank the gods.” His fingers comb idly through soft brown hair as the young Paladin regains his bearings, shaking so hard Markus worries he might fall apart at the hinges. “You’re okay. You’re okay, Connor, I’ve got you.”

    They’ve done this dance many times: Connor gets himself hurt, and Markus picks up the pieces.
