Summary
Hiccup didn't stay when he realized he would be forced go kill a dragon. Instead he runs away with Toothless to find a place to call home. They make their way to an island without any people on it but still close to the shipping lanes. There he and Toothless learn to survive on their own.
Over the next three years, he becomes a rumor to the traders who pass by his island. If he needs something he'll put up a flag and leave a note for a trade. A few come if they're in need of healing as well. Its a peaceful existence until Viggo hears rumor of a ghost or man depending on the story who can talk to dragons. Viggo is intrigued and sets out to find the truth in the rumors.

Summary
As the latest Dragon training begins, Viggo and his people arrive on Berk to help hunt for the nest. Their delayed arrival was because of a storm and so they stayed to help with the training. Viggo is a little surprised to find a teenager smaller than the others with others in training. One who would disappear right after training and only appear for dinner.
Then the boy started doing significantly better than the others. Trying to follow him ended up with Viggo losing him more than once. Then the boy would suddenly be gone and no one seemed to know where. Then whispers about missing supplies. It wasn't much it was happening regularly. At first, it was just food, fish and bread, but then tools, herbs and bandages, blankets, and clothes. The other Vikings paid no attention, but Viggo recognized someone was preparing to runaway. He had a feeling he knew who.

Years before dragons reshape Berk, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III discovers a hidden cove with ancient altars to forgotten gods.
Desperate for somewhere he belongs, he begins leaving offerings.
Something answers.
A year later, he wakes to a strange screen:

Summary
Almost as long as there have been humans and dragons there have been those who can wield Magick. A gift from the Gods that came with Soulmarks that named a person for you. For a time man and dragon lived in harmony where those who bonded with them. Then they weren't no one in living memory knew what changed or why. Magick became a taboo and it was a death sentence to use it. Dragons were hunted like beasts and no longer trusted the humans they once called partners.
Berk in the last few generations have began to reject many things that were once called gifts from the gods. Stoick refuses to accept soulmates as anything than a curse and he passes down the views to his people. While he doesn't allow the use of Magick within the tribe he does use it to name heirs. To be a potential future Chief, one must be able to use High Magick. When Hiccup goes for Dragon Training he is given the test. He cannot use High Magick. It accelerates his plans to leave. Otherwise he knows he won't survive.
