Summary
Almost as long as there have been humans and dragons there have been those who can wield Magick. A gift from the Gods that came with Soulmarks that named a person for you. For a time man and dragon lived in harmony where those who bonded with them. Then they weren't no one in living memory knew what changed or why. Magick became a taboo and it was a death sentence to use it. Dragons were hunted like beasts and no longer trusted the humans they once called partners.
Berk in the last few generations have began to reject many things that were once called gifts from the gods. Stoick refuses to accept soulmates as anything than a curse and he passes down the views to his people. While he doesn't allow the use of Magick within the tribe he does use it to name heirs. To be a potential future Chief, one must be able to use High Magick. When Hiccup goes for Dragon Training he is given the test. He cannot use High Magick. It accelerates his plans to leave. Otherwise he knows he won't survive.

For a year, Viggo chased the Dragon Master. It took months for him to even see the Dragon Master. Only when he and his Nightfury crashed badly injured did they meet face to face. He'd never seen someone so determined to protect a beast even at the risk of his own life. He surprised himself and everyone else when he let them go. It takes another six months for the Dragon Master to meet him with anything more than hostility. But Viggo's patience was rewarded. It took a long time to get the man to trust him and even longer to get the dragon to tolerate him. Sometimes the Dragon Master would visit the Hunters village and give the people advice on how to bond with the dragons. With time things changed but Viggo still missed the one thing he truly wanted. The Dragon Master's full trust and for him to stay.

The Gods unsatisfied with how things ended for Toothless and Hiccup decide to send them back with all of their memories. Hiccup who'd become jaded from the loss of his best friend, doesn't know what to make of being returned to the past. He does know that he won't make the same mistakes from before. Can someone get through to the jaded Hiccup as he hides on an island far from other humans? Hiccup and Toothless wake up the day after he cut Toothless free of the bola that injured Toothless's tail.
They runaway from Berk and set up Dragon's Edge as a Dragon Sanctuary. With his memories of the past he is able to better prepare for the fight against the Red Death and rescue dragons. Little does he know that he's drawn the attention of someone from his past earlier.

He takes to the islands on the edge of trade lanes in case he needs to trade with people to survive. It is far from where Berk Vikings or Hunters go to hunt dragons. Hiccup uses the peace to learn to survive on his own as well as learning Dragonese from Toothless. There they make a home for themselves and they help dragons heal from injuries. Beyond a handful of trades with trusted traders, Hiccup has almost no human contact. Until someone washes up on the beach shore badly injured and he brings them back to his hut.

The next day, he went to find the Dragon only to see that he was hurt and couldn't leave... or at least that's how it looked to him. He had never met a Dragon before, but this one was hostile at times, yet didn’t have any plans to hurt him... in fact, after a while, he became obsessed with him.
Though... Toothless isn't really a dragon; he just doesn't trust humans. He was a hybrid of a human and a dragon, a mythic shapeshifter with a dark backstory that is represented in a tattoo that Hiccup thinks is a tribe symbol.
Hiccup thought he had time to bond with Toothless and train the other dragons, but when he found out his father was negotiating with the chief of the Berserker tribe to marry Dagur, he knew he had to leave. He believed he could get on Toothless and fly away... but he hadn't realized how close he was to the others. So much so that they come with him; they can start their own tribe... or will Dagur and Stoic let Hiccup leave that easily?

Summary
Hiccup didn't stay when he realized he would be forced go kill a dragon. Instead he runs away with Toothless to find a place to call home. They make their way to an island without any people on it but still close to the shipping lanes. There he and Toothless learn to survive on their own.
Over the next three years, he becomes a rumor to the traders who pass by his island. If he needs something he'll put up a flag and leave a note for a trade. A few come if they're in need of healing as well. Its a peaceful existence until Viggo hears rumor of a ghost or man depending on the story who can talk to dragons. Viggo is intrigued and sets out to find the truth in the rumors.

"What's gotten into you, bud?" The dragon paid no mind to what his rider said as he ran back to the cage that he was previously at. Toothless warbled, gesturing at the cage.
"What is it, bud?" Hiccup asked. "Is there another dragon in there?" The rider hopped off the dragon's back and approached the cage. A low growl came from its depths as two eyes glared back at him.
"Oh," he gasped softly. "Hey there. I'm sorry I didn't see you." He slid open the lock, slowly walking into the cage. The dragon growled as the human slowly approached it. "I'm gonna get you outta here." He raised his hand slowly, waiting for the dragon to come. "It's okay. I won't hurt you." As the growling slowly subsided, the dragon slowly moved from the shadows. As Hiccup was finally able to lay his eyes on her, he gasped.
"A night fury?"
