Hiccup who'd become jaded from the loss of his best friend, doesn't know what to make of being returned to the past. He does know that he won't make the same mistakes from before. Can someone get through to the jaded Hiccup as he hides on an island far from other humans? Hiccup and Toothless wake up the day after he cut Toothless free of the bola that injured Toothless's tail.
They runaway from Berk and set up Dragon's Edge as a Dragon Sanctuary. With his memories of the past he is able to better prepare for the fight against the Red Death and rescue dragons. Little does he know that he's drawn the attention of someone from his past earlier.

As the latest Dragon training begins, Viggo and his people arrive on Berk to help hunt for the nest. Their delayed arrival was because of a storm and so they stayed to help with the training. Viggo is a little surprised to find a teenager smaller than the others with others in training. One who would disappear right after training and only appear for dinner.
Then the boy started doing significantly better than the others. Trying to follow him ended up with Viggo losing him more than once. Then the boy would suddenly be gone and no one seemed to know where. Then whispers about missing supplies. It wasn't much it was happening regularly. At first, it was just food, fish and bread, but then tools, herbs and bandages, blankets, and clothes. The other Vikings paid no attention, but Viggo recognized someone was preparing to runaway. He had a feeling he knew who.

Viggo shoots a Night Fury that was passing over their island down with a bola. The creature had been raiding their camps and ships for months. To be able to shoot it down was a big win for the Hunters. The next day Viggo goes over to the woods to find the dragon but only finds the destroyed bola that was clearly cut with a knife and torn pieces of leather. It didnt make any sense. Someone had cut the dragon free? Why?
That night Viggo sees a young man that isn't part of his tribe sneak into the forge taking some leather and when he confronts him the young man growls and roars and the young man escapes. Viggo is intrigued and wants to find him or catch him the next time he is in the forge.

Hiccup uses the peace to learn to survive on his own as well as learning Dragonese from Toothless. There they make a home for themselves and they help dragons heal from injuries. Beyond a handful of trades with trusted traders, Hiccup has almost no human contact. Until someone washes up on the beach shore badly injured and he brings them back to his hut.
