Summary
There's no shortage of essays about Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, but I've never seen one that really articulates what I think is important about the movie: that everyone in it is having a terrible time and yet somehow you the viewer often come out of it feeling as though they did not! Or, that the federation is in a similar position to Nazi Germany circa 1944: losing a war but unable to see it and cheerfully marching people off to their own obliteration. Maybe nobody needs convincing of this but it felt good to put all my thoughts into one place. Once I'd finished I then had the urge to post it to Al Gore's fine internet, in case anyone besides the people I wrote it for thought it was cool too. Maybe that person is you! Even if it isn't, maybe you'll find it makes you consider another angle on something you hadn't previously.
