He should be dead, so many times over, yet still possessed the presumptuous greed to beg the stars for another sunrise, another letter from his girls, another smile from his oldest and dearest friend.
The terror of that ticking clock should have been enough, he thought as he stared, wide eyed, down at the delicate branch pushing its way up from underneath his thumbnail.
