Zuko stared up at him with his large, gold eye. “How are you on the Sovereign then? We’re just barely out of Fire Nation Waters, you know.”
It was a perfectly reasonable question, Zuko thought, but the expression on the man’s face switched from constipated to ashy, so he must have said something wrong. “I’m so not doing this right now.” The man muttered before bellowing. “Hakoda! Get your scrawny ass over here and handle this!”
“That’s a naughty word.” Zuko pointed out, squirming uncomfortably in the man’s grip. “Can you please put me down now?” This whole adventure had already managed to go spectacularly sideways.

Azula grew up learning that love is something to be earned.
That it is negotiated, conditioned, and lost the moment you stop being useful.
So she made herself indispensable.
It worked… until it didn’t.
Now she is alone, far from everything she knows, in a world she does not understand and surrounded by people who insist on seeing her as something she does not know how to be.
A sister, a friend, a child… a daughter.
Especially that last one.
Regina Mills does not ask for perfection, does not demand obedience, does not offer love as a reward.
She simply… stays.
And Azula does not know how to live in a world where she does not have to earn the right to exist.

Summary
Silence hangs between them and Azula wants to flee, wants to take the words back and return to her room but Zuko shifts and pulls her into a hug before she can do any of those things. “Do you love me and mom?”
The question catches her by surprise. Zuko is gentle and kind-hearted, certainly in comparison to herself and their father, so while she doubted he would push her away, she had expected him to ask her what she did that was cruel and hateful. Not this.
“Of course I do.”
The problem is, she doesn’t think her version of love is the good kind.
Or, Ursa isn't a completely terrible parent and that changes nearly everything.
