It was the most important experience of John's life, kissing Paul. It was what he thought about when they were apart, when it had been a while, when they were someplace where they couldn't touch, which was most places most of the time. It hadn't started that way, though. It had been hard at first, to hold back. He'd wanted all of Paul, right away and in abundant quantities, like he wanted everything in his life. But now, with Paul finally in his arms, shaking like John once had, John would have done anything to keep from frightening him away.

Summary
August 1960: The dog days of summer. John's art school days have just recently come to an end, and Hamburg is right around the corner. Anticipating the tide that's rushing towards them, John and Paul are decidedly cloistered away together at all their favourite haunts, carving out pockets of time together while they still can.
Or: An excuse to write Paul reading Keats aloud to John while they lie amongst the sunsoaked stones of St. Peter's Churchyard.

Summary
If you looked back and forth at someone like that in real life - even at your wife or your child - alternating between intensity and carelessness, it would alarm you and the other person, it would make both of you self-conscious about how long you should hold the look for and how long you should look away, what amount of time is normal and appropriate. But all the rules go out the window when you play and sing with someone.
John and Paul are friends and experimental musicians living in the west of Ireland with their partners and children. For their latest project, an album recorded without using any digital equipment, they have also committed to giving up their phones and devices. The removal of distraction helps their music, and also makes them aware of other, more personal things about each other and their relationship.
