“Pete, your legs are still there,” said Tony. He gave his knee a pat under the hospital blanket. Whatever pain drugs they were giving him, it must’ve been the good stuff.
“No my other legs. I should have four more.”
“Kid, is this a joke? Some kind of gen z humor I don’t really understand?”
Peter didn’t answer. His fingers were in his mouth, tracing over his teeth.
“Why aren’t my teeth pointy? What have you done with my fangs?”
“You’re not an actual spider, Pete,” said Tony, concern drenching his voice. He reached out, hoping to provide some comfort with a hand on his shoulder, but Peter flinched away and hissed. “Now that’s just uncalled for.”
OR
Peter bumps his head on a mission, and when he wakes up, thinks he's a spider.

“What can I get for you two fellas?” asked the waitress, still grinning, still wildly amused by the way Tony bullied the manager on shift into letting Buddy come inside the diner and eat at a table.
“I’ll take a cheeseburger,” Tony told the waitress, “And he’ll have the same.”
Buddy barked three times.
“Scratch that, three cheeseburgers and a bowl of water for my friend,” said Tony, catching the eyes of a group of men that sat at a table across restaurant. “What are you all staring at? It’s a dog, alright? What? Never seen a guy having burgers with his dog before?”

"But he’s smart!" May had blurted, looking up at the teacher with misplaced anger. "I don’t...how does this make sense?"
She was worried, unaware, unprepared, not like Peter who had known for a while that some things were trickier for him than other kids. All the rules hidden in cheerful little rhymes and singing songs about which letters get along and those who don’t play nice; all the robotic reciting of the alphabet nearly every day: none of it had ever truly helped Peter understand how it all worked.
A brand new door opened in his life that day. On the front of it, the word ‘DYSLEXIC’ was printed in bold, the certainty of what it meant holding the letters permanently in place.
