They were about the size of a thumbnail, and so deeply green they were almost blue toned. The man had come closer, and while Jon inspected the seeds, he was gently patting Gertie's head. The animal was making contented noises, and Jon made up his mind.

Mum had said if he wasn't quiet and didn't go to bed, the Bebok would take him away.
He trembled, and waited for it to get him. His Granny Hala had told him stories about the Bebok, who stole children away in his dirty sack if they were bad. He had tried to be quiet, and good, but the bowl had slipped, and he'd hurt mum, and he was going to be taken away.
Maybe that was better. Maybe his mum would be happier that way.
