    Jiang Wanyin's life up to this point has just been survival. Survive to win the war, survive to rebuild Lotus Pier, survive to raise his nephew. When Jin Guangyao insists on split custody of Jin Ling, Wanyin finds himself visiting Jinlintai so often that he runs into the Jin sect leader's sworn brother, Lan Xichen. The Lan sect leader inserts himself unwaveringly into his life. He's strange, overly familiar, and so godsdamned perfect that Wanyin doesn't know what to do with him.
    A reluctant friendship inevitably turns into romantic attraction, something neither man has any real experience with. They spend years dancing around the obvious, but just as they both finally decide to do something about it, Jin Guangyao's betrayal leaves Xichen unable to trust himself with anything. He enters seclusion and cuts contact with the cultivation world completely, leaving Wanyin confused and heartbroken.
    Three years later, Xichen is wasting away from grief, and Lan Wangji becomes desperate. He wagers his hope on any lingering affection Wanyin might hold and the healing bond between the Yunmeng brothers as he makes a desperate request to save Xichen's life.
