Summary
What does Shinra want him to say?
He could tell him that when he found Izaya, pale and dying on the floor, that it felt like it was both of their lives bleeding out into the polished wood beneath him. That the thought of his worst enemy, cold and dead, left something in his chest feeling raw and wrong, like an important part of himself would wither and decay with Izaya. How does he explain the anxiety that overwhelms him when Izaya leaves his line of sight, even for a moment?
He doesn’t understand it himself, so he’s not going to bother to try and explain it to Shinra.
“Despite what that flea bastard says, I’m not a monster. I wasn’t going to let him die if I could help it.”
“He’d let you.”
“Yeah. I know.”

Izaya Orihara was forced to grow up overnight, trading his childhood for sleepless nights, empty stomachs, and the crushing weight of keeping two infants alive on his own. One year before entering Raijin Izaya is pushed to the brink, forced to accept help from a stranger whose oddly angry on his behalf, after that night they dont meet again until high school.
Issue; they cannot for the life of them recognize the other, let alone want to get close enough to realize.
