"...My offer still stands, Ser Criston."
"Offer?"
"Oldtown. With me. Should Tumbleton and war not be to your taste." He felt that same twinge of nearly tearful desperation as he turned to glance at Cole's profile in the bright dawn light. His throat burned with the need to be understood. "I know you dismissed it for servitude but it was not my intent --"
Cole interrupted with a soft "stop." He stayed in step with Gwayne, though, and then turned to look at him again. "We will bring our men to Tumbleton, find a place for them with your cousin. From there I do not know what the future could hold."Criston Cole chooses Tumbleton over imminent death.

Alicent's hands squeezed his. “It is some consolation to have you here again. To be allowed to have you with me."
Daeron's brow furrowed. That did not sound right. “Have me with you?” he echoed, uncertain.
“Yes.” She seemed confused. “Have they not told you …?”
“I had thought … am I not to take the black?”
“No. The Queen, in her mercy–” Alicent smiled again, but now it took on a sardonic air, “–has decided it would be better suited to keep you close. To keep you at home.”

Summary
“We got word you were dead,” he explained, voice uneven.
Criston nodded and finally was able to force out something resembling words: “I was.”
A wry smile settled on Gwayne’s lips. “No time for theatrics, Ser Criston, you will spook the horses.”
You don’t understand, he wanted to say, they did not let me rest. The Stranger sent me back. But instead, Criston reached for the other man’s gambeson, grasping for it and bunching up the material in an urgent gesture. Briefly, Gwayne's hand came to rest over his and he nodded, fiercely so.
By the command of The Stranger, Criston Cole lives again. A higher power calls him to Tumbleton, though he does not understand why. Could it be someone needs him there? Meanwhile, after the battle has laid waste to the town, Ser Gwayne Hightower must pick up the pieces and searches for his nephew Daeron. An unforseen twist of fate has him join forces with a friend he had believed lost.

Summary
Criston stiffened, and his breath paused. An awful sensation, cold enough to numb, had begun to clamber up his limbs, wrenching him into place.
In he breathed.
As the brisk air of dawn rattled into his lungs, he rasped hoarsely against the thunderous, sudden agony spurting in from every orifice, wriggling between tendons and joints. In he breathed.
As man scorned god, god scorned man. He belonged to no faith, and thus none would claim him.
"Seven Hells," swore some unseen stranger - no friend or foe. "Look at the state o' ye, lad!"
Otherwise: Criston Cole survives the Butcher's Ball, and feverishly follows his new, burning purpose south towards Tumbleton.
