She heard a clock somewhere strike the tenth hour, and she wondered idly if perhaps her companions would agree to leave by the twelfth, when the music ceased. People’s loud conversations became whispers, as they all turned their heads to look up at the top of the ballroom’ staircase.
The witch followed their gaze, and her heart stilled. She stopped breathing. Because there she was. There, at the top of the stairs. Standing. Beautiful. Alive. Elphaba trembled at the sight.

“What do you mean?” Glinda raised an eyebrow, ready to dismiss the child’s suggestion.
“A spell to reveal the truth.”
The witch scoffed.
“I already know the truth. I’ve seen the truth with my own eyes.”
She had watched it happen. She had been there, crying alone in that closet when that farm girl had thrown the bucket. Her Elphie had melted right in front of her, and Glinda had stood there unable to do anything.
For as long as she lived, Glinda would never forget the way Elphaba had screamed. That piercing, pain filled sound. She had died in agony. Glinda didn't need a spell to tell her that.
“It can't hurt.” Ozma shrugged. “Look, if I’m wrong, we can try this again.”

Galinda is quiet. "I'm going to become your new best friend," she says finally.
This startles Elphaba so much that she looks up from her book. There's no twitch in Galinda's lips; she's gazing at Elphaba with uncomfortable sincerity. Elphaba glares back.
“You'll see,” Galinda promises, her ineffable cheer returning. "I'm irresistible."
Elphaba realizes the black hat is a prank before Galinda has the chance to make it up to her at the Ozdust, producing the most one-sided best friendship in Shiz history.
