"Mate." He heard Boyd say, sounding a little nervous for some reason. "Why'd you tell the entire class and Professor Wymack that it smelled like Minyard?"
Neil spluttered, and Andrew pictured him flailing about like an idiot. "I dunno! Coz it did! And it was a bit frightening, to be honest, the way it was making me feel. I couldn't think straight."
Big mood, always, Andrew thought, and snorted silently in his head. That was wishful thinking on his part, regarding Neil. But alas. He’d sigh forlornly if he was capable.
"Merlin's saggy left one, Neil. That's coz it's-"
"Amortentia!" Someone shouted in a squeaky voice, and Andrew’s everything suddenly and immediately tore to a screeching halt.
When the Sixth Years have to learn about Amortentia-the most powerful love potion in the world that gives off an aroma of the things that are most attractive to each individual who smells it-and Neil obliviously blurts out that he smells Andrew, they're both sent into a dumb, gay panic about what exactly that means to them.

Andrew hated him on first sight in his second year, and waited for him his third year, and grieved him his fourth. Now Neil's back, scarred and half-broken, but still mouthy and beautiful.
It's horrible timing, really. Andrew's been doing such a good job not caring about his future.

“You said it’s shit.”
“I did.” Andrew agrees.
“You said it isn’t a permanent fix.”
“It’s not.”
Andrew reaches through the window, plucks the tree shaped air freshener off the rearview mirror, holds it to his nose. Neil waits, knows that it lost its scent months ago. He isn’t sure why he’s held on to it, just knows he likes the look of it dangling while he drives. It’s another identifiable feature to his car, another way to know Neil Josten drove this Subaru.
His mother would have hit him before throwing it away.
Andrew places the scentless piece of cardboard back in its spot with a delicacy that indicates understanding. A gentleness that makes Neil wonder if Andrew Minyard, with his family and his fancy sports car and his leather jacket, is also learning how to be a real person.
“I can fix it.” Andrew says, and for the first time since he came upon Neil and his unresponsive engine, he looks away.
“You can fix it,” Neil echoes, a question and a statement in one.
“Yes.” Andrew replies.

But that was the problem. Neil, the hotels, the shows, the sex – none of it was supposed to ever be serious.
It was just an unfortunate reality that now he had to deal with Neil looking at him like that. Not sad, not hurt, just a shuttered up expression. A blank space that had been practiced to the point of perfection over the years spent in an abusive household. Andrew would know – Neil had told him all about his past over the eight months they had been hooking up.
It meant nothing.
“My bad. I know not many people know about this, I should have thought that through before-”
“There is no this”
The expression smoothed out even further, and Andrew felt a knife twist in his gut. It was Neil’s turn to scoot over more, and Andrew watched as the chasm between them grew another couple of inches. A little more and Neil would be out of reach.
