Peter clears his throat. “I just… Why didn’t you guys tell me you were together?”
What?
“Excuse me?” Bucky and Sam exclaim simultaneously
In which Peter assumes that Sam and Bucky are together, and it drives Bucky crazy for the rest of the day.

The first time it happens, they’re in Wakanda.
“You're bored,” Bucky murmurs, low. Hears how gravelly it comes out, exactly the smoke-filled tone he used to use to achieve a very particular purpose. “Wanna do something dumb?”
“Like what?” Sam asks, flat. Bucky grins, just a little, sharp.
“I can think of a few things,” he says, and steps closer, watches how Sam doesn't step away. They're in each other's space, and Bucky knows goddamn better than this, knows he put himself away in Bucharest for a reason, but fuck, he's tired and he's pissed off and he's reckless, and so is Sam, energy bouncing between them. “For instance,” Bucky says, waits a beat. “I'm pretty dumb,” and hears Sam's breathing speed up.

Sam returns home to Delacroix to process the aftermath of Karli's death and prepare for next steps as the new Captain America. Bucky tags along but the two aren't always the best at reading each other. Sam is patient, he can wait. But patience can wear thin. And Bucky? Bucky's just trying to keep his head above water, there's no way Sam would ever consider their relationship as more than a promise he made to Steve.

Sam’s just trying to live his life, that’s all, and he keeps getting confronted by Bucky Barnes in a soft flannel shirt, sleeves rolled up, hair all soft and shiny. Bucky glances over at him and smirks, and this is really very embarrassing, how Sam can’t hide his attraction even if he keeps a totally straight face.
