Summary
Every muscle in Inej’s body froze. Suddenly, the ceaseless noise of the crowd fell into silence around her. It was all she could do to keep her feet planted on the wet floorboards of the harbor. Her eyes flitted listlessly around the face of the man before her—his nose was softer, but still just as straight as the one that Inej saw every day in Ketterdam. His hair was a shade or two lighter, but it fell in the same pin-straight sheet that Inej knew. His eyes were more hooded, brighter with hope, but Inej knew damn well who else those eyes belonged to. The faintest of firepox scars traced his jawline, disappearing beneath his collar.
”Jordie,” she breathed.
——
On the Wraith, Inej comes across someone that Kaz had lost forever. And for better or for worse, she brings him back.

Summary
Kaz Rietveld died in the harbor when he was nine. Soon after, Kaz Brekker appeared in Ketterdam, spinning the story of two lives he’d taken already at such a young age. The deaths of two farmboys from Lij he insisted were his own doing, his own fault.
Rumors of the deaths of the Rietveld boys at Brekker's hands spread.
One day, they circled around and reached the ears of a strangely not dead Jordie Rietveld.(Or: Jordie lives and comes to believe the mysterious Dirtyhands is the one who ran the con that supposedly killed his little brother)

Summary
Kaz is dead. His youngest son is dead, has been dead for eleven years, and David Rietveld refuses to make peace with it. But maybe he doesn't have to, because one day Jordie comes home from university, scared and dishevelled and haunted, and the only thing he says is: "I saw him. I swear by Ghezen, I saw Kaz."
A little part of David has always had a bit of hope that Kaz is somehow alive- they never did see his dead body, after all. He just never assumed that his little boy was the infamous nightmare of Ketterdam they call Dirtyhands.
