Summary
After walking along the roads of shops for a few minutes, Wylan can smell coffee. Plenty of coffee, too; it is far from a weak smell. He immediately sets out in search for the source of this scent, because why on earth are people drinking no small amount of caffeine at this time— it may be an area full of college kids, but, last Wylan checked, nobody drank a whole tanker full of coffee at twelve in the morning.
As he walks further down the streets in his search, he sees it; a cafe, clearly open from the lights on and a couple of baristas in uniforms inside. It definitely looks cozy, and it is quiet, which is to be expected at this time at night (–or is it technically morning? Does it even matter?)
Wylan has to now decide whether or not to satiate his curiousity, or to do the much more sensible thing and listen to his anxiety telling him that he should turn around and walk right back to his flat

Once, in a time long since forgotten, there was a powerful Empire that dominated the world. A constant threat, kingdoms stayed in perpetual fear, readying for a threat they knew was coming, but had no idea of when. The mainland of the Empire was secretive, shrouded in smoke that could not be breached, unable to be found without the proper medallions and amulets granting permission to enter. The Vassals of this Empire were largely left alone, with various of the ruling families often taking these lands for their own, to benefit from the resources, and to leverage them for political advancement and arrangements. The ruling and noble families of these lands were disposed of, but after the initial occupation, the common people were often allowed to continue their lives largely unimpeded. Or, at least, that's what those in power believed. And while there are surely many stories these people could tell, they are not the focus of this story. For this story takes place in the capital of the Vyslaran Empire, Onsyth, and follows the goings-on of the elite. And the unexpected companions they find along the way.

Wylan’s ears burned red all over again, Jesper noted with approval.
“Flirting because I hate you and you think you can win me over!” It seemed like a monumental effort for Wylan to keep his feet planted rather than stomp them out of frustration.
