    Summary

"Don't yell at me," he mumbled helplessly, his massive shoulders shaking with a sob he couldn't hold back. "Please don't... I'm trying. I really am trying."

Jason Todd has zero self-control left, a head full of Pit madness, and a desperate need for the yelling to stop. He expects a fight. He expects another threat. He doesn't expect Batman to drop to one knee and surrender.

Or: A story where Bruce tells his son he's doing a good job, and Jason decides to cling to that sweet lie until it becomes the truth.

    Summary

Nakahara Chuuya considered himself a loyal member of the Armed Detective Agency.

He worked hard and fought harder.
Despite the monster lurking inside him and the gravity weighing on his shoulders, he had tried his best to find a place in the peaceful, lawful Yokohama — a place in the light.

    But Chuuya was keeping secrets.

"Your little gravity manipulator, Fukuzawa-dono. A date with Chuuya; that's my price for the truce."

[Or: Chuuya left the Port Mafia a year after the Verlaine incident. Meanwhile, rumor has it that the Demon Prodigy became boss the day Ougai Mori traded Oda's life for a Skilled Business Permit.
Dazai murdered his predecessor in cold blood. Chuuya is nobody's dog, and walks in the light.

They are not partners anymore, right? Right?]

    Bookmarker's Notes

Death wasn't a friend, calling you for a game of tag—though it certainly ran towards you. It wasn't a mother, with soft hands and a comforting touch. And it wasn't a father, taking you into it's arms and tucking you to bed once you fell asleep on the couch again.

No, it was early in life, earlier than he would like to admit, that Jason Todd found the truth about it.

Death was cold, merciless. It wasn't delicate. It was painful. It took mothers in the middle of the night, thrashing and agonizing as the drugs finally ceased her heart. And it took children, far from home, as they begged for someone to come and help, being left alone with the sound of laughter and metal breaking skin, and the absence of the ringing one would hear after an explosion.

So yes, it could be said Jason knew everything there was to know about death. He had seen it on others, had been through it himself. What he didn't know was what came after.

Or: The Lazarus Pit has some side effects and Jason forgets to mention it to his family.
