Henry’s eyes followed the trail of discarded sheets and stained scraps of cloth.
“Don’t you fucking move!”
The shout came from the far end of the room. He froze in place as commanded, slowly lifting both hands in the air and turning to face the man properly. There, tucked into the corner, draped loosely in a blanket and bleeding where he’d torn at his bandages, sat the man with his back pressed against the wall. A single trembling hand was outstretched towards Henry, and in it, a gun.

They both paused, having called out to each other at the same time. Hans motioned for Henry to go first.
“If you ever feel lonely again, call for me. I cannot restore what was taken from you, but I will not leave you to endure it alone.” Henry said before turning and walking away, leaving Hans stunned.
Henry is assigned to guard a sanctioned psyker of the detachment his brothers were sent to aid. Hans is assigned an Ultramarine who is far kinder than he has any right to be. Neither of them is prepared for the outcome of surviving one impossible campaign too many.

Summary
Alternative timeline where Hans never confessed at Suchdol and went on to marry Jitka while Henry drifted away. But then, almost two years into his marriage, Jitka dies in childbirth, leaving Hans with his newborn son. He’s completely at a loss, scared and overwhelmed, and grieving Jitka, because even though he never loved her the way she deserved, she did share his life, if only for a little while. When Henry shows back up, having received Hans's letter about Jitka's death, he slots into Hans's life perfectly, and has a talent for taking care of Hynce. Naturally, Hans's feelings return, but is he brave enough to tell Henry this time?
